Disney World Park Increasingly at Risk of Closing From Mid-October–Here’s Why

Walt Disney World Resort has officially wrapped up its rare six-park summer season, marking a shift into fall for Central Florida.

From May 21 through September 7, both Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach welcomed guests at the same time—a departure from the typical rotation where only one water park operates. Blizzard Beach reopened just a few weeks after Typhoon Lagoon’s May 1 start, following a milestone 30th anniversary celebration in April. Since the pandemic, this overlap has been unusual, giving families and thrill-seekers the chance to explore all six parks in one summer.

Blizzard Beach brought back favorites like Melt-Away Bay and Tike’s Peak, while thrill fans raced down Summit Plummet and Toboggan Racers. These aquatic adventures complemented Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom, offering a refreshing break from the heat.

Another highlight for many visitors this year came through a benefit announced on Disney Parks Blog in 2024. Beginning in 2025, Resort hotel guests, Disney Vacation Club Members, Annual Passholders, and cast members will receive complimentary water park admission on their Resort hotel check-in day.

This overlapping summer also coincided with another landmark for Orlando: the launch of Universal’s Epic Universe on May 22, the day after Blizzard Beach reopened.

Across Walt Disney World, 2025 has already introduced major changes. Frontierland is preparing for its future, DinoLand U.S.A. is evolving into Tropical Americas, and Monstropolis is taking shape at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Guests have also said goodbye to the Muppets until 2026.

With Blizzard Beach now closed as of September 8, all water park fun shifts to Typhoon Lagoon. The question remains how long it will stay open, especially as cooler temperatures arrive. Per the official Walt Disney World calendar, Typhoon Lagoon is scheduled through November 20, though it is likely to continue into 2026 before Blizzard Beach takes its turn once again.

Local forecasts point to a change on the horizon. Click Orlando reports that Central Florida will see its first cold front of the season beginning Friday, September 12. Afternoon highs will still hover in the upper 80s, but dew points are expected to dip into the 60s by Saturday night, cutting down on the heavy summer air. By Sunday morning, parts of the Orlando area may even wake up to temperatures in the 60s°F for the first time since mid-May, breaking a 116-day streak of mornings above 70.

While the shift won’t bring an immediate cool down, the combination of warm afternoons and crisp mornings signals that fall is on the way. Historically, the larger seasonal front doesn’t arrive until October 19, which may once again force water park closures like those Blizzard Beach experienced in late 2024 and early 2025. If conditions mirror last year, guests may find Typhoon Lagoon closed for stretches during fall and winter.

Click Orlando notes: “Typically, the big season-changing front doesn’t arrive until later in October.” For Orlando, that means cooler weather officially begins October 19, narrowing the window for uninterrupted water park days.

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his… More »
