Disney World Makes MORE Changes to Spaceship Earth

Exterior work on Spaceship Earth continues as the EPCOT attraction prepares for its upcoming indefinite refurbishment.

On August 6, Disney Dining reported that crews had replaced the dull, white panels on the Eastern side of the Project Tomorrow building attached to Spaceship Earth. This isn’t the iconic “EPCOT ball” building, but it hosts the ride’s post-show experience and the adults-only GEO-82 lounge, which debuted earlier this summer. Crews replaced the faded, dirty panels with a shiny metallic silver material.

On Wednesday, August 13, BlogMickey reported that crews have extended the project to the Western side of the Project Tomorrow building, attached to Spaceship Earth. According to their report, the new silver panels now cover about half of the Western side of the building, and almost all of the Western side. At this time, it doesn’t look like crews will touch the actual geodesic structure of Spaceship Earth.

Walt Disney World Resort has not issued a public statement about this exterior overhaul, which comes weeks before Spaceship Earth closes for refurbishment on August 25. Disney has yet to announce a reopening date for the attraction or share any details about the scope of the project.

Spaceship Earth was initially scheduled for a multi-year reimagining as part of Walt Disney World Resort’s 50th anniversary in 2021. However, like many other projects at the Disney parks, it was indefinitely postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Its most recent update was in 2007.

The slow-moving attraction takes guests on a calm journey through the history of human innovation. From cave drawings to the desktop computer, riders explore how people have evolved to communicate over the centuries. On the way back to Earth, Disney Park guests can use an interactive screen to imagine their own technologically advanced futures.

Spaceship Earth will close for refurbishment on August 25. Walt Disney World Resort hasn’t announced a reopening date for the World Celebration attraction.
