Magic Kingdom is heading into a major period of change, and one of Tomorrowland’s most recognizable attractions is about to look very different when it returns.
Disney is getting ready to unveil a heavily updated version of Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, and newly surfaced footage from inside the ride suggests this is anything but a simple refresh. The Tomorrowland attraction has received extensive updates as part of Disney’s broader 2025 and 2026 investment strategy, with a clear focus on modernizing both gameplay and storytelling.
Guests stepping into their Star Cruisers will immediately notice the difference. The ride’s iconic blasters, previously mounted to the vehicles, have been redesigned to be fully detachable. This change allows for more precise aiming and a greater range of motion, shifting the experience closer to an interactive game. Alongside this, new lighting, upgraded targets, and improved onboard displays create a more dynamic environment that feels far more in line with current theme park expectations.
The enhancements go beyond just gameplay. Disney has added refreshed show scenes and introduced a new animatronic character named Buddy. This figure appears before the ride begins, helping to guide guests through their mission and offering a training-style introduction before they face Emperor Zurg. While the core story remains intact, this addition gives the attraction a stronger sense of structure and progression.
Before the attraction officially reopens, Disney is giving cast members early access through a series of preview events. These previews are set to take place between March 21 and March 27, just ahead of the scheduled April 8 reopening. This step allows employees to experience the updated ride firsthand while also helping Disney fine-tune operations under realistic conditions.
These preview periods are a long-standing part of Disney’s rollout strategy. They provide an opportunity to test timing, evaluate guest flow, and ensure that new features—like the updated blasters and scoring systems—are working smoothly before the public debut.
However, these previews can sometimes lead to unexpected developments. In the past, Disney has occasionally opened attractions early in what are often referred to as “soft openings.” These unannounced opportunities allow select guests to ride ahead of the official launch if everything is running as planned.
While this can be an exciting surprise for some visitors, it may not be ideal for everyone. Guests who have planned trips specifically around the April 8 reopening could find the experience less impactful if the ride begins operating earlier than expected. Instead of a clearly defined debut, it may feel like the attraction has already been up and running.
