This week, Walt Disney World Resort has made an unplanned adjustment in response to an official order from President Donald Trump. Guests visiting Magic Kingdom Park, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park on Wednesday noticed that American Flags were lowered to half-staff in tribute to former Vice President Dick Cheney.
On Tuesday, November 4, President Trump issued a proclamation ordering American Flags to be flown at half-staff after the death of Dick Cheney, the former Vice President of the United States. Cheney, who passed away on November 3 due to complications from pneumonia and heart disease, was 84 years old. Cheney served as Vice President from 2001 to 2009 under President George W. Bush, and he is often remembered for his role in shaping the U.S. response to the September 11 attacks and his influence in the Iraq War.

Walt Disney World Resort followed President Trump’s directive to lower its flags at all properties, including its theme parks, in honor of the late former Vice President. The flags are expected to remain at half-staff “through internment,” although the exact timeline for the full tribute has not been disclosed.
While Walt Disney World Resort is private property, the company has a history of adhering to the U.S. Flag Code, which requires certain protocols for flag displays during periods of national mourning. This is not the first time the Disney parks have lowered their flags in honor of a public figure. Earlier this year, Walt Disney World Resort also honored Republican activist Charlie Kirk after his sudden death in a shooting at a college campus in Utah. The resort has previously lowered flags following the passing of former President Jimmy Carter and Pope Francis.

Despite lowering its American Flag, Magic Kingdom Park continues its daily tradition of the Flag Retreat Ceremony, held at 5:00 p.m. each day in Town Square. The ceremony involves a veteran guest helping to retire the flag and a performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Guests interested in attending can check the Walt Disney World Resort website or the My Disney Experience app for up-to-date scheduling details.
