Disney World Extends Work on Abandoned Galactic Starcruiser Through August 2027

Disney isn’t finished with the former Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser property just yet.

Nearly three years after Disney permanently shut down its ambitious Star Wars experience, construction work connected to the building is moving forward. A newly extended permit gives Disney until August 25, 2027, as it prepares the former Galactic Starcruiser for an entirely different purpose.

But don’t expect another Star Wars experience to emerge from the project.

A futuristic building entrance labeled "Galactic Starcruiser" buzzes with life as people flow in and out. Set in a lush, green forest under a clear blue sky with birds soaring above, the modern structure marks the grand return of the Galactic Starcruiser. Nearby, cars quietly await their passengers.

The Halcyon’s days of welcoming Walt Disney World guests are over. Instead, the massive building is becoming something far more practical.

Construction Can Continue Through 2027

Disney has extended a general construction permit for the Galactic Starcruiser property at 201 S Studio Dr.

The permit names Balfour Beatty Construction LLC as the contractor. Disney originally filed an identical permit in August 2025, meaning the latest filing effectively extends that work for another year.

Its new expiration date is August 25, 2027.

Disney’s Facility Asset Management team filed the permit, suggesting the work involves general construction and maintenance. Walt Disney Imagineering has separately filed a permit for construction at an administration building beside the former hotel.

Changes to the original property are already underway, including the removal of theming that helped transform the building into the fictional Halcyon starcruiser.

Galactic Starcruiser Isn’t Reopening

Disney announced in January 2025 that it planned to convert the closed Galactic Starcruiser into Walt Disney Imagineering offices.

That decision effectively gives one of Disney World’s strangest abandoned properties a second purpose while keeping it closed to regular guests.

Galactic Starcruiser originally opened March 1, 2022. Disney designed the two-night experience around interactive storytelling, live entertainment and Star Wars characters rather than the traditional resort experience.

However, its price drew criticism, and reports indicated Galactic Starcruiser suffered from lower-than-expected occupancy and failed to become profitable.

Disney permanently closed the experience on September 30, 2023.

Disney Has Plans for the Abandoned Building

The latest extension doesn’t necessarily mean construction will last until August 2027. A permit expiration establishes how long the authorized work can continue, rather than confirming a completion date.

Still, it shows Disney isn’t walking away from the property.

Instead of demolishing the specialized building or leaving it empty, Disney is transforming it into a workplace for Imagineers.

Galactic Starcruiser may be gone for good, but its former home is sticking around. The difference is that once Disney finishes the transformation, the people heading inside won’t be vacationers boarding the Halcyon.

They’ll be helping create what’s next for Walt Disney World.

Andrew Boardwine

A frequent visitor of Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort, Andrew will likely be found freefalling on Twilight Zone Tower of Terror or enjoying Pirates of the Caribbean. Over at Universal, he'll be taking in the thrills of the Jurassic World Velocicoaster and Revenge of the Mummy
