Disney Writes to Thousands of Guests, Will Change Their Ongoing Vacations
The promise of a Disney vacation often rests on precision — carefully planned rides, shows, and stops designed to keep surprises at a minimum. Yet recent years have shown how fragile that promise can be. From sudden closures to unpredictable weather, the magic has occasionally been interrupted.
At Walt Disney World, guests have witnessed everything from sewage spills in Liberty Square and Frontierland to an oil spill that shuttered Haunted Mansion. A year earlier, an unlikely visitor — a wild black bear — forced temporary closures at Magic Kingdom before wildlife officials escorted it back into the forest.

The unpredictability extends far beyond the theme parks. On Disney Cruise Line ships, storms and sea conditions can alter plans within hours. For passengers who boarded the Disney Treasure this week, that reality quickly became clear when their Caribbean voyage shifted course overnight.
A Sudden Rewrite at Sea
Tropical Storm Melissa, now forecast to strengthen into a hurricane, altered the ship’s route and disrupted thousands of itineraries.
Guests awoke to find official letters placed in their staterooms, informing them that long-planned stops had been canceled.
The letter, which was shared on Reddit, reads: “We have been closely monitoring the storm’s forecasted track. Due to the possible impacts in the Caribbean, we have made the decision to change your itinerary. Instead of visiting Tortola and St. Thomas, you will now visit Cozumel, Mexico on Tuesday (Day 4) and an additional Castaway Cay call on Thursday (Day 5).”
Another section added, “We appreciate your understanding regarding this necessary itinerary change. The safety and well-being of our guests and crew members is our highest priority.”
The decision underscores how quickly a vacation can shift at sea. Ports considered safe one day can become inaccessible the next, leaving Disney to improvise alternatives while assuring guests their safety remains paramount.
