A New Tune: Disney Updates “It’s a Small World” Song After 60 Years
Disney has confirmed that one of its most iconic attractions, “it’s a small world”, will receive a significant update this summer.
Known for its timeless message of unity and its unforgettable theme song, the classic ride will debut a new verse at Disneyland Park in Anaheim on July 17, coinciding with the park’s 70th anniversary.
Originally introduced at the 1964 New York World’s Fair and designed by Disney Legends Mary Blair and Rolly Crump, “it’s a small world” has remained a staple across multiple Disney parks. The slow-moving boat ride takes guests through a colorful, whimsical world where children in traditional dress sing in multiple languages, reinforcing a theme of global harmony.
New “it’s a small world” Lyrics
The ride’s signature song, composed by The Sherman Brothers, is – for better or worse – one of Disney’s most recognizable melodies. This summer, however, guests will hear something new. The additional verse, written by the late Richard M. Sherman before his passing in 2024, was first unveiled in The Last Verse, a short film released in November.
The lyrics read:
“Mother Earth unites us in heart and mind
And the love we give makes us humankind
Through our vast wondrous land
When we stand hand-in-hand
It’s a small world after all”
Disney will also screen The Last Verse daily at the Main Street Cinema in Disneyland Park, with the film currently available on Disney+ and YouTube.
While there is no official word on whether the updated verse will be added to versions of the ride in other Disney parks, the change marks a rare musical update to the attraction.
This is not the first modification to “it’s a small world” in recent years. In January, Tokyo Disneyland introduced “it’s a small world with Groot”, an overlay featuring the beloved Guardians of the Galaxy character. The update included several Marvel Cinematic Universe favorites, reimagined in the signature artistic style of the original attraction.
Disneyland’s 70th Anniversary Celebration
Beyond the “it’s a small world” update, Disneyland’s 70th anniversary celebrations will bring additional changes to the park. The Opera House on Main Street, U.S.A., will feature a new gallery experience, created in partnership with The Walt Disney Family Museum. This exhibit will showcase more than 30 artifacts, including original items from Walt Disney’s private apartment above the Fire Station.
Additionally, Walt Disney – A Magical Life, a new show originally set to debut in May, has been delayed until July 17. The production will include an Audio-Animatronic figure of Walt Disney, along with remastered footage and audio recordings chronicling his life and legacy. After its premiere, the show will be performed in rotation with Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln.
