Disney Suddenly Pulls Buzz Lightyear From Public Access in Florida

We have a soft spot for Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin.

Not in a serious theme park analysis kind of way — in a “we have spent an embarrassing amount of time trying to beat our own high scores” kind of way. It is one of those Magic Kingdom attractions that never gets old, where the premise is simple enough that anyone can enjoy it but deep enough that regulars can obsess over optimal target strategy for years.

So when the ride went into refurbishment and came back with handheld blasters, a new practice scene, updated show scenes, and a revised scoring system, we were paying attention. The official reopening is April 8, 2026.

But Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin has been quietly soft opening for two consecutive days now, and the early guest reports from inside the updated attraction are worth sharing — because some of what they are describing is exactly why soft openings exist, and some of it is a little funny in a Disney-we-need-to-fix-this-before-Tuesday kind of way.

What Is Actually Happening Right Now

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin soft opened for its second straight day on March 31, starting at 9 a.m. — one hour after Magic Kingdom’s 8 a.m. opening. It is not listed on My Disney Experience wait times. Only standby is available. Lightning Lane is not operating during the soft opening period.

Disney has not officially confirmed a preview window or announced Annual Passholder preview days. The back-to-back soft openings suggest the plan may be to keep testing through to the April 8 official reopening, but nothing is confirmed. And as always with soft openings: this attraction can close at any time without notice, may not open on a given day, and should absolutely not be built into your Magic Kingdom plans as a guaranteed experience until April 8 arrives.

Soft openings exist specifically so Disney can run a newly updated attraction with real guests, catch whatever needs catching, and give cast members time to dial everything in before the official debut. What is happening right now is that process working as intended — which brings us to the early reports.

The Things That Are Already Being Flagged

Theme Park Cheetah, posting on X as @GreenCheetah99, shared this after riding during the soft opening: “Buzz’s audio in the queue is way too quiet and also his projector is a bit misaligned. The view-master toy is also looking pretty wacky by just spinning endlessly.”

And then, less than an hour and a half later, this update: “Update: Now he is being blocked by the curtain just over an hour later.”

Quiet queue audio. A misaligned projector. A view-master prop spinning on an endless loop. And then Buzz himself partially blocked by a curtain. Within the first hour of soft opening. We are not going to pile on because this is exactly what soft openings are for — finding this stuff before April 8 so Disney can fix it before the official debut. But it does paint a pretty clear picture of where the attraction is right now, and guests visiting before April 8 should factor that in.

What Is New When Everything Is Working Correctly

Here is the part we are actually excited about, because the updates to Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin are genuinely significant.

The biggest change is the shift from mounted blasters to handheld blasters with laser targeting. That is a fundamental change to how the attraction plays. The old fixed cannons worked fine but they limited your range and made certain targets nearly impossible depending on where your vehicle stopped. Handheld blasters with laser targeting give you actual freedom of movement, which is going to completely change how regulars approach the scoring strategy they have been refining for years. The ride vehicles have been refreshed. A new Buddy practice scene has been added before the scored portion of the ride — essentially a tutorial level that helps guests calibrate with the new blasters before the competition starts. Show scenes have been updated throughout the attraction. And the scoring system has been revised.

That is a lot of change to one ride. When it is all working correctly, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin on April 8 is going to feel like a new attraction that happens to be in a building you already know.

What This Means for Your Magic Kingdom Visit

If you are at Magic Kingdom before April 8 and Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is running when you walk through Tomorrowland around 9 a.m., absolutely ride it. You will get a first look at the updated experience and the soft opening standby line is typically shorter than what you will encounter after the official opening and Lightning Lane returns.

Just do not plan your day around it. It is not on My Disney Experience. It cannot be Lightning Laned. It can close without notice. And based on the early reports, it is still being actively calibrated. Treating it as a happy bonus rather than a scheduled stop is the right approach until April 8 confirms everything is ready.

For anyone with a Magic Kingdom trip after April 8 — that is the version you want. Official reopening, fully operational, Lightning Lane available, and presumably without any curtains blocking the animatronic.

We will report back with our first real ride on the updated attraction and our honest assessment of how the new blasters change the high score strategy we have been running for years. We have done the research. We have strong opinions. Stay tuned.

We are tracking the Buzz Lightyear soft opening situation and will update as Disney addresses the technical issues and as April 8 gets closer. Our full Magic Kingdom guide is on the site with current attraction availability, Tomorrowland updates, and everything else you need before your visit. Check it, plan around confirmed availability, and then come find us when you are ready to compare scores.
