Disney Starts Rolling Out Changes at Classic Magic Kingdom Restaurant

A longtime Magic Kingdom favorite is starting to feel a little different lately, and regular visitors are beginning to pick up on it. Nothing about The Plaza Restaurant screams “major overhaul,” but if you’ve dined there before, you’ll likely notice that things aren’t quite as static as they used to be.

That’s because Disney has quietly started introducing updates to this Main Street, U.S.A. staple—and it doesn’t look like it’s a one-and-done change. Instead, the company appears to be rolling out adjustments in phases throughout 2026, allowing the restaurant to evolve without ever fully closing its doors.

For a location that has stayed mostly the same for years, even small updates stand out.

A Classic Spot That Rarely Changes

The Plaza Restaurant has always been one of those reliable, easy-to-overlook gems inside Magic Kingdom. It’s not the flashiest dining location in the park, but that’s part of its charm. Guests come here for a quieter meal, classic American dishes, and a break from the chaos just steps away near Cinderella Castle.

For years, the menu reflected that same consistency. Burgers, sandwiches, and a lineup of milkshakes that didn’t change much over time. It was predictable—in a good way.

But now, Disney is starting to tweak that formula.

Menu Updates Lead the Way

The first noticeable change comes from the dessert side of the menu, where The Plaza Restaurant has refreshed part of its artisanal milkshake lineup.

Two new flavors have been introduced:

  • Cookies ‘n Cream Milk Shake
  • Chocolate-Hazelnut Milk Shake

These replace a couple of the older options, which had been around for quite a while. At the same time, Disney kept some familiar choices, like the strawberry shortcake shake and the customizable classic version.

That mix of old and new feels intentional. It keeps returning guests comfortable while still giving them something fresh to try.

Even more interesting, one of the new additions comes in at a slightly lower price than some of the previous offerings. That’s not something you see very often at Walt Disney World, especially when new items are introduced.

Why Disney Is Taking It Slow

Instead of shutting down The Plaza Restaurant for a full refurbishment, Disney is clearly taking a gradual approach.

We’ve seen this strategy play out across the parks in recent years. Rather than closing popular locations for long stretches, Disney updates them piece by piece. It keeps capacity high while still allowing changes to happen behind the scenes.

For guests, that means you can still book a reservation and enjoy the experience—but it might not be exactly the same as your last visit.

For Disney, it offers flexibility. If new menu items are a hit, they can expand on them. If something doesn’t connect with guests, it can quietly disappear without much disruption.

What Could Be Next

Right now, the milkshake changes seem like the first step.

When Disney starts refreshing a menu that has stayed the same for years, it usually signals more updates are on the way. That could mean additional food items, seasonal rotations, or even small operational tweaks.

There’s also the chance that visual updates could follow. While nothing has been announced, phased changes sometimes extend beyond menus and into décor, seating, or overall atmosphere.

Given the restaurant’s location right on Main Street, any updates would likely be handled carefully to preserve its classic feel.

A Restaurant in Transition

For guests visiting Magic Kingdom in 2026, The Plaza Restaurant is in an interesting spot. It’s still the same place many fans know and love—but it’s also clearly evolving.

You might notice a new menu item here, a slight change there, and over time, those small updates could add up to something more noticeable.

That doesn’t mean the restaurant is losing its identity. If anything, Disney seems to be trying to keep it relevant while holding onto what made it popular in the first place.

And for longtime fans, that balance is exactly what makes this kind of update worth watching.

Andrew Boardwine

A frequent visitor of Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort, Andrew will likely be found freefalling on Twilight Zone Tower of Terror or enjoying Pirates of the Caribbean. Over at Universal, he'll be taking in the thrills of the Jurassic World Velocicoaster and Revenge of the Mummy
