Disney posted a notice on the Plaza Inn listing that reads: “The Character Dining experience at Plaza Inn will be temporarily unavailable starting August 10, 2026, and is expected to return in late September.”
No specific return date. No explanation for the pause. August 10 through sometime in late September, the most beloved character dining experience at Disneyland Park is not happening.
If your late summer Disneyland trip had Plaza Inn character dining on it, you need to read this now. And if you have never been and have been putting it off, this is your situation.
What Makes Plaza Inn the One We Keep Recommending
We have eaten at a lot of Disney character dining experiences across both coasts. Plaza Inn is the one we bring up most often when people ask where to go at Disneyland, and it is not close.
Seven or eight characters at a single meal. Let that number land. No other character dining location at Disneyland Resort comes near that count. Minnie Mouse is your guaranteed hostess. Beyond her, the roster changes and surprises every time: Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Pluto, Chip and Dale, Suzy and Perla from Cinderella, Daisy, Piglet, Rabbit. Characters circulate to every table, which means the interactions come to you rather than requiring a walk to a designated meet point. For a family that wants maximum character time without maximum planning effort, Plaza Inn is the answer.
The food is genuinely good. Not just acceptable for a theme park buffet, actually good. The bananas foster waffle topping is the detail we mention every single time because it sounds like an add-on and turns out to be the reason the Minnie waffles are unforgettable. The fried chicken with biscuits and gravy at a breakfast buffet is the kind of decision that should not work and absolutely does. The made-to-order omelet station, the pastries, the full hot breakfast spread. It is all-you-care-to-enjoy with servers plating food for guests.
The price is $55 per adult and $33 for children ages 3 to 9. Gratuity is not automatically added. Magic Key discounts apply. Kids under three eat free. It is the most affordable character dining at Disneyland by design and by a meaningful margin.
And if you book a reservation at or before park opening, you get access to dedicated character dining turnstiles on the left side of the entrance that let you into the park earlier than general admission. That perk alone has made Plaza Inn the reason guests structure their entire arrival morning the way they do.
All of that stops on August 10.
What Happens to Guests Who Already Have Reservations
If you are sitting on a Plaza Inn character dining reservation between August 10 and late September, do not assume Disney will handle the communication on a timeline that works for your planning. Check your reservation now through the Disneyland app or call directly. Disney will typically reach out to affected guests but the pace of that outreach does not always align with when guests need to make rebooking decisions.
The early entry benefit attached to pre-park-opening reservations also disappears with the character dining pause. If that turnstile access was part of your morning strategy, you need a new plan for that day.
What the Booking Process Looks Like for Anyone Who Wants to Go Before August 10
Reservations open 60 days in advance at 6 a.m. through the Disneyland app. They go fast, particularly for mid-morning windows around 9 or 9:30 a.m., which tend to be the most popular for families who want a breakfast buffer without arriving at the very start of the dining window.
You need a theme park ticket and a Disneyland Park reservation for the same day. The meal requires park admission, so the cost of the experience sits on top of whatever you are already spending to be in the park.
When you arrive, check in through the app or with the host and you will meet Minnie before being seated. That photo is included in your PhotoPass downloads for the meal. Complimentary Minnie buttons for each person in the party. Flag any dietary needs at check-in because the chef will come to the table and can prepare fully customized allergy-safe plates, including gluten-free Minnie waffles that are not on the main buffet but are absolutely available if you ask.
Plan 90 minutes for the full experience. Ask for a table near the central walkway rather than the outer edges to maximize your character interaction time. Bring your autograph book if that matters to your group.
The Late September Return Lines Up With Something Worth Knowing
When Plaza Inn character dining comes back in late September, it will return at the start of one of Disneyland’s most popular seasonal events. Halloween Time typically begins in early September and runs through October, and the late September return window means Plaza Inn character dining and Halloween Time are going to overlap.
For guests who have flexibility in their travel dates and wanted to attend Plaza Inn specifically, waiting until the return in late September means combining character dining with Disneyland at one of its most atmospheric and celebrated times of year. That is a meaningful upside to what is otherwise a frustrating announcement.
In the meantime, Storytellers Café at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel is the most direct alternative for character dining at Disneyland Resort during the pause. It operates with table service rather than a buffet, at a higher price point, with a different character roster and meal structure. It is not Plaza Inn. But if character dining is the non-negotiable part of your trip and August or September is when you are going, Storytellers Café is where you go.
