From frozen ice cream delights to gooey caramel candies to iconic crispy treats, the Walt Disney World Resort has a lot of sweet treats to choose from. You can find desserts at Magic Kingdom’s Main Street Confectionery, throughout EPCOT’s World Showcase, and even as far as the Galaxy’s Edge in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. However, today at DisneyDining.com, we’re talking about a dessert found somewhere you may not expect.
When many Disney fans think of decadent desserts in EPCOT, they think of the several World Showcase locations serving international delights. Karamell-Küche, L’Artisan des Glaces, and Kringla Bakeri Og Kafe, just to name a few, are creating delicious confectioneries. However, today, we’re only venturing to World Discovery for our dessert.
EPCOT has seen a lot of updates in recent years, in new stores, restaurants, and attractions. One of our favorite dining updates has been the addition of Connections Eatery and Cafe to World Discovery. Both dining locations are contemporary-themed, with large murals and styled lighting, serving fusion cuisine with unique flavors.
Black Forest Baumkuchen
At both Connections Cafe and Eatery, you can find one of Walt Disney World’s most intricate desserts, the Black Forest Baumkuchen. “Baumkuchen,” which translates to “tree cake,” describes the multilayered cake designed by Pastry Culinary Director Stefan Riemer. On Instagram, @chefstefanriemer showcases his delicate dessert.

Even though there is great debate on the pronunciation of the cake’s title, there’s no debate on whether it’s delicious. (Which it totally is!) The unique technique used to make the Black Forest Baumkuchen adds each layer one by one. This means when the cake is cut, you can identify each ring, which is quite reminiscent of the rings of an ancient tree.
The Black Forest Baumkuchen is served at Connections Cafe and Eatery topped with Morello Cherries, Vanilla Chantilly Creme, and a Chocolate Mickey Mouse Silhouette. Dusted with confectioner’s sugar, this dessert is as pretty as it is tasty, making it a must-try while visiting EPCOT.

This signature dessert recently saw its last voyage with the closure of the Galactic Starcruiser experience in September 2023.
