Disney Park Opening Late Next Month Due to Major Event

EPCOT will open at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 19, 2026, instead of the usual 9 a.m. due to the runDisney Springtime Surprise 10-Miler. Early Entry for Disney resort guests begins at 9:30 a.m. instead of 8:30 a.m.

If you’re planning to rope drop a park on April 19, choose a different park. EPCOT’s delayed opening eliminates the early-morning touring advantage.

Why the Change

The runDisney Springtime Surprise Weekend runs April 16-20, featuring races centered around Disney duos:

  • April 16: 5K with Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde from Zootopia
  • April 17: 10K featuring Winnie the Pooh and Tigger
  • April 19: 10-miler hosted by Joy and Sadness from Inside Out

The 10-miler starts at 5:00 a.m. and uses roads throughout Walt Disney World that must be closed to ensure runner safety. This requires EPCOT to delay opening while race operations are complete.

What the Schedule Looks Like for Disney

With Early Entry Access (Disney resort guests):

  • Arrive around 9:15-9:20 AM to clear security
  • Enter park at 9:30 AM
  • Get 30-minute head start before general opening

Without Early Entry:

  • Arrive just before 10 AM
  • No benefit to arriving earlier—you’ll just wait outside
  • Enter when park opens at 10 AM

Disney Traffic and Transportation Issues

Road closures for the race will cause significant delays throughout Disney World property. Expect travel times to increase by 20-30 minutes or more compared to normal.

If driving to EPCOT on April 19, build substantial extra time into your schedule. A trip that normally takes 15 minutes could take 45 minutes or longer.

Disney transportation (buses, monorails, Skyliner) may also experience disruptions and delays. Plan for significantly longer travel times—potentially 30-60 minutes extra.

Disney Crowd Expectations

The 10 a.m. opening means all guests enter simultaneously rather than trickling in over morning hours. This creates:

  • Immediate long wait times at popular attractions
  • Intense initial crowding throughout the park
  • Multi-hour waits within 30-60 minutes of opening

Popular attractions affected:

  • Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind
  • Test Track
  • Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure
  • Frozen Ever After

Additionally, runDisney weekends attract massive crowds beyond race participants. Many runners bring families who visit parks while loved ones race, boosting attendance above typical spring weekends.

Better Disney Alternatives

If visiting Walt Disney World for multiple days, consider visiting EPCOT on a different day with regular hours. Use April 19 for:

  • Magic Kingdom (normal hours)
  • Hollywood Studios (normal hours)
  • Animal Kingdom (normal hours)
  • Disney Springs
  • Resort pool day

If April 19 Is Your Only EPCOT Day

Adjust expectations and planning:

  • Accept you cannot rope drop with standard advantages
  • Plan extra travel time for road closures and traffic
  • Set realistic expectations for crowds and wait times
  • Consider using Lightning Lane to bypass standby lines
  • Focus on lower-wait attractions or Flower & Garden Festival experiences

The Direct Disney Warning

Don’t be the guest standing outside EPCOT at 9 a.m., wondering why the gates are closed. The park opens at 10 a.m. on April 19, 2026, with Early Entry at 9:30 a.m. for eligible guests only.

Expect road closures, traffic delays, and elevated crowds throughout the day. The delayed opening allows a more relaxed morning if you prefer sleeping in, but the trade-off is intense crowding once the park opens.

Whether racing, cheering for runners, or just visiting Disney World that weekend, knowing how runDisney events affect operations helps you plan effectively and avoid frustration.
