Disney Just Dropped a Surprise on Magic Kingdom Guests During the Busiest Week of the Year

If you are heading to Magic Kingdom this week, there is something operating in Tomorrowland that Disney has not told anyone about, and the window to take advantage of it is right now.

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin has soft-opened at Magic Kingdom ahead of its official reopening on April 8, 2026. It is not showing up as open in the My Disney Experience app. There is also no posting of a wait time. The attraction is still technically listed as closed for refurbishment. But it is running, the upgrades are live, and the lines are manageable in a way they will absolutely not be once April 8 arrives, and the crowds figure out what changed.

What Is Happening Right Now

Soft openings began Monday, March 30, and the expectation is that the attraction will continue operating daily through the official reopening date. Disney has not publicized the soft opening, and there are no affiliation previews planned for Annual Passholders or Disney Vacation Club members. What that means practically is that the guests riding Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin right now are almost entirely people who happened to walk past Tomorrowland and noticed the construction walls were finally down.

That is the best-case scenario for anyone visiting this week during peak Spring Break. Low wait times, fully upgraded experience, no Lightning Lane required.

One thing to keep in mind is that soft opening schedules are unpredictable. The attraction may open late, close early, or go down without notice throughout the day. Treat it as a bonus rather than a guaranteed plan, and you will not be disappointed.

What Actually Changed on the Ride

The upgrades to Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin are more substantial than a typical light refresh. The attraction now opens with a new tutorial scene featuring Buddy, a brand new character developed by Walt Disney Imagineering and Pixar Animation Studios, who preps guests for their Star Command mission before the ride begins.

The Star Cruiser ride vehicles have been redesigned with new colors inspired by Buzz Lightyear and Star Command. Each vehicle now features video monitors that display real-time scoring throughout the experience. The handheld blasters have been upgraded to always-on laser versions. They are available in two colors per vehicle to reduce confusion among riders. The old static Z targets have been replaced with reactive targets that light up when hit. Along with new lighting, sound, and vibration effects, the whole experience feels more dynamic than it did before the refurbishment.

What This Means for Your Visit

This is peak Spring Break week at Walt Disney World. Magic Kingdom is running at some of its highest crowd levels of the year. Having Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin back online early adds real capacity to Tomorrowland at the moment the park needs it most.

Once the official April 8 opening happens and Disney starts publicizing the upgrades, wait times are going to climb fast. The attraction is confirmed to remain a Tier 2 option on Lightning Lane Multi Pass. It is expected to become one of the most in-demand Tier 2 picks at Magic Kingdom once the word gets out.

The soft opening window is the best version of this experience available right now. Short lines, upgraded ride, and the particular satisfaction of being in on something most guests are completely unaware of.

Go this week if you can.
