Disney Fans on Edge: Haunted Mansion or Pirates Could Be Next to Close

There’s an unsettling feeling creeping through the Magic Kingdom—and it’s not just the Haunted Mansion’s ghosts. It’s the growing fear that one of Disney’s most iconic attractions could be next on the chopping block.

With Splash Mountain already transformed and the entire Rivers of America area closed down for a new Cars-themed land, fans are watching the next potential shutdown like hawks. The question everyone’s whispering: Is Haunted Mansion in trouble, or could Pirates of the Caribbean be next?

Haunted Mansion Is Already Seeing Changes

Guests walking past Haunted Mansion recently have spotted construction walls near the outdoor queue area, which are tied to the broader work being done at the Rivers of America. But that’s not all. Some of the changes happening could be seasonal—especially with Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party coming up—but others feel suspiciously like something bigger.

Rumors about Haunted Mansion getting a significant update have floated around for years. Some insiders believe the stretching room preshow might be reimagined. Others suggest new effects or even additional scenes. While nothing’s been confirmed by Disney, the fact that it’s even being talked about is enough to raise alarms for longtime fans.

Let’s not forget—the ride’s been running since 1971. A refresh isn’t out of the question, especially with Disney constantly seeking ways to modernize its classics while tying into newer media and tech.

What About Pirates of the Caribbean?

Unlike Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean hasn’t shown any outward signs of change. No walls. No work crews. Just boats gliding through dark caverns and salty scenes. It’s still drawing big crowds and operating smoothly.

But that doesn’t mean it’s off the table.

Disney has never shied away from tweaking Pirates. We’ve already seen major scene edits to update characters and themes. And over in Shanghai, Disney built an entirely different—and technologically stunning—version of the ride that puts the Magic Kingdom version to shame. Could a similar overhaul be in the works for Orlando? It’s a long shot, but not impossible.

Plus, with a Pirates of the Caribbean movie reboot still looming somewhere on the horizon, Disney might want to “refresh” the ride to match whatever direction that franchise takes next.

So Which One Will Go First?

If we had to place bets, Haunted Mansion looks like the more immediate candidate for closure or refurbishment. The physical signs are already there—blocked pathways, early construction, queue limitations. It might not be permanent, but all signs point to at least a temporary closure in the near future.

Still, it’s worth stressing: No one expects either attraction to go away forever. These are tentpoles of the Magic Kingdom experience. But in today’s Disney, a “reimagining” can sometimes feel just as shocking as a shutdown.

Why Fans Are Worried

Disney has made it clear: even nostalgia-heavy classics aren’t immune. With the closure of Splash Mountain and Rivers of America still fresh in fans’ minds, the thought of another major ride going under—even temporarily—has people nervous.

Whether it’s ghosts or pirates, Disney fans are bracing themselves. The parks are evolving fast, and you never know which beloved ride might be next.
