Disney Cruise Guests Locked Out of Onboard Shopping on New Ship

A promising maiden voyage hit an unexpected snag this week when a new booking policy left scores of Disney Adventure guests unable to shop or meet a single character.

The Ship That’s Already Making History

Disney Adventure earned its superlatives before a single paying guest ever stepped aboard. The vessel — rescued by Disney after its original owner went bankrupt and abandoned the nearly-finished ship in a German warehouse — is now the largest in the Disney Cruise Line fleet and the company’s first purpose-built for the Asian market.

Maiden voyages departing Singapore are imminent, offering three- and four-night itineraries packed with several firsts for Disney Cruise Line: Duffy and Friends-themed entertainment and shopping, the Ironcycle Test Run roller coaster at sea, and the Disney Imagination Garden, an open-air interior courtyard anchored by a live entertainment stage.

Thousands of press guests — journalists, influencers, vloggers, and other invited attendees — are currently sailing aboard a preview voyage ahead of the public launch. And while much of the ship has drawn enthusiasm, one policy created a very different kind of buzz.

Timeslots Gone Before Disney Guests Could Blink

Character meet-and-greets and onboard merchandise shopping on Disney Adventure aren’t walk-up experiences. Both require guests to book timeslots through the Disney Cruise Line app and, while the slots are free, availability is limited. During the press sailing, both categories sold out nearly immediately, locking out a significant portion of guests from meeting Duffy the Disney Bear or setting foot inside the ship’s souvenir shops for the entire voyage.

The Guest Services desk became the destination for frustrated guests, with a lengthy line forming almost immediately. WDWNT, among the press outlets aboard, documented the scene on X (formerly known as Twitter):

There’s a giant line at Guest Services because the booking for character meet & greets and shopping aboard the Disney Adventure filled near instantly. We were told erroneously that the shops would be standby tonight, but I guess not.

Why wasn’t this communicated to guests properly?

What followed made things worse. Guests who had missed out on bookings were told the merchandise locations would eventually open on a standby basis…a promise that never materialized. Anyone without a timeslot may end the voyage without ever setting foot in the onboard shops.

Disney Cruise Line has not issued a public response to these guest complaints.
