Disney Pulls Plug on Fan-Favorite Free Transportation Service

One of the things that Disney is best known for in its theme parks is the wide variety of transportation methods that guests can take. For many, these transportation methods leave guests wanting to dive into the full Disney experience.

At Walt Disney World Resort, for example, the Orlando theme park has so many modes of transportation that it could blow your mind! If you are a guest at a Disney resort, a car is not at all necessary, even though Disney is the size of San Francisco. There are Disney buses that will bring you to Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Disney Springs, and the water parks at no cost.

There is also a monorail that both resort guests and off-property guests can use to access Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, or the monorail resorts like Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort.

Additionally, there are multiple boat docks at various resorts that can take you around property, as well as some of the theme parks. Most recently, Disney added the Disney Skyliner that connects multiple resorts to EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios. This is a massive perk that guests can utilize during their stay.

But free transportation is also available in the parks, not just outside them.

Have you ever been walking down Main Street, U.S.A., thinking about how tired you are after rope-dropping Magic Kingdom (getting there as soon as it opened) and having to last all day long? Then, you see a trolley cart and notice there are actually people sitting on it, so you hop on and ride down in style.

That is one of many examples of in-park transit that not only serves as functional, but also caters to the theming and experience.

Over in Disneyland, the same methods of transport exist. Disneyland also has trolleys at Disneyland Park, and Disney California Adventure also has a red trolley cart that will transport guests… or at least, it did.

Disney reporter Scott Gustin has officially confirmed that the Red Car Trolley in DCA will be removed in 2025.

“NEW: Avengers Campus construction at DCA, set to begin in early 2025, will require the removal of the backstage Red Car Trolley barn and will result in Disney discontinuing operation of the attraction in early 2025, Disneyland officials said. A specific date will be shared later.”

The Red Car Trolley, which debuted in July 2012 as part of the complete reimagining of Disneyland Resort’s second gate, has become an iconic feature of Buena Vista Street and the park as a whole. The trolley travels between Buena Vista Street and Hollywood Land, offering guests a leisurely ride through the park’s charming atmosphere. The trolley cars are meticulously crafted to resemble the historic Red Cars, capturing the essence of early 20th-century Southern California transportation.

No closing date has been announced.

Looking ahead, the expanded Avengers Campus is set to increase its footprint with the addition of two new attractions: the fourth ride, Stark Flight Lab, and the third attraction, Avengers: Infinity Defense, both currently under construction. These new additions are anticipated to double the size of Avengers Campus. As of now, no other closures have been confirmed to accommodate the expansion.

The Red Trolley Car will be one of many things that have been removed from Disneyland Resort. At Disney California Adventure, specifically, the Hyperion Theater is still missing a show and has not had one since the short run of Rogers The Musical last summer.

Additionally, World of Color – ONE, the nightly spectacular at Paradise Bay in Disney California Adventure Park, will undergo a six-week refurbishment starting in September.

The show will be closed from Monday, September 9, 2024, until October 22, 2024, likely for routine maintenance. Currently, the show runs nightly at 9 p.m. and 10:15 p.m., with the final performance scheduled for Sunday, September 8, 2024. The holiday version, World of Color – Season of Light, is expected to return in the fall of 2024.

Regarding cutting transport at Disneyland Resort, the monorail is also closed for refurbishment without any reopening date in sight. Over at Walt Disney World, Disney’s largest transport cut happened when the Magical Express, the free bus shuttle that magically took guests and their luggage to their Disney resort in a themed bus that allowed the vacation to begin as soon as they got off the plane, has also been closed for years now.

What do you think of DCA removing the Red Trolley Car?
