Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress may not be the flashiest attraction at Walt Disney World Resort, but it’s one of the most historic, hiding secrets even the biggest Disney Parks fans don’t know. Despite being labeled as “boring” by some guests, this classic Tomorrowland attraction is brimming with Disney history and unexpected connections.
A World’s Fair Creation
Created for the 1964-1965 New York World’s Fair, Carousel of Progress showcased Walt Disney’s vision of how technology transforms daily life. After its World’s Fair debut, the attraction moved to Disneyland Park before finding its permanent home in Magic Kingdom Park’s Tomorrowland in 1975.
A Hidden Haunted Mansion Connection
While most guests simply enjoy the rotating scenes of the Progress family, one little-known detail connects the Carousel of Progress to another beloved attraction: The Haunted Mansion. As part of a deep dive into the attraction’s history, Disney Parks fan and TikTok user @themouselets recently revealed that one of Carousel of Progress’s animatronic characters makes a surprise appearance in Liberty Square.
@themouselets after 10+ days of traveling today i had to pick a topic all about the home – Monsanto House of the Future you are next! #disneyhistory #disneysecrets #disneyworld #disneyfactmas
“If you think this grandma looks familiar, it’s because this exact character is used as an animatronic on The Haunted Mansion,” the video explains. Fans who frequent both rides may recognize her in the ballroom scene, a fun Easter egg that connects Tomorrowland to another historic Walt Disney World Resort attraction.
The Missing Girl Mystery
Another curiosity lies in the first scene of Carousel of Progress, where guests meet John Progress and his family. While most characters—John, his wife, their son, and teenage daughter—reappear in later scenes, a little girl with braids vanishes without explanation.
“No one really knows who she is,” the TikToker shared. This unexplained absence has become a fun mystery for Disney history buffs, sparking theories about her origin and why she disappears from the story.
General Electric’s Influence on the Carousel of Progress
As Carousel of Progress evolved, remnants of its original sponsorship with General Electric remain visible. A rotating vacuum reveals the GE logo; several kitchen appliances still carry General Electric branding.
The sponsor actually spurred one of the most significant changes to the attraction. In 1974, General Electric asked Disney to replace the iconic “There’s A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” theme song with a new tune, “The Best Time of Your Life.”
“General Electric didn’t like the song because they wanted people to buy their products today,” the TikToker explained. Even after General Electric ended its sponsorship in 1985, the replacement song remained until Disney restored the Sherman Brothers’ original tune in 1993.
Hidden Mickeys and Imagineer Tributes
The final scene of Carousel of Progress—a glimpse at a 20th-century version of the “future”—includes several fun details for observant Disney Parks fans. Guests can spot Hidden Mickeys in the form of a nutcracker, a painting, and a present under the Christmas tree.
The scene also pays tribute to Disney Imagineer Marty Sklar, who played a significant role in developing the attraction. A small note on the wall honors his contributions, a subtle detail that longtime Disney fans cherish.
Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress: An Underappreciated Classic
For some Disney Park guests, the Carousel of Progress is little more than a place to relax in air conditioning or catch a quick nap, but it remains one of Walt Disney World Resort‘s most historic and innovative attractions. It embodies Walt Disney’s belief in progress, optimism, and innovation, even as it celebrates a nostalgic version of the future.
“This attraction is so underappreciated, but for those of us who love it, we know how special it is,” the TikToker concluded.
