As tensions between Canada and the United States continue to escalate, some Canadian travelers are rethinking their Disney vacations. With economic uncertainty, rising tariffs, and political turmoil, many have chosen to stay within Canada or travel outside North America rather than spend their money in the U.S.
Trudeau Calls for Economic Resistance Against U.S. Tariffs
Earlier this month, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau urged citizens to support their own economy rather than spending money across the border, citing potential economic strain due to U.S. tariffs.
“Choose Canada,” Trudeau said during a press conference. “It might mean checking the labels at the supermarket and picking Canadian-made products. It might mean opting for Canadian Rye over Kentucky Bourbon or forgoing Florida orange juice altogether. It might mean changing your summer vacation plans to stay here in Canada and explore the many national and provincial parks, historical sites, and tourist destinations our great country has to offer.”
Trudeau’s economic battle cry ignited fierce debate online, with some Canadians choosing to boycott travel to the U.S., particularly theme park destinations like Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort. The discussion got all the more heated when Trudeau was caught on a hot mic, suggesting that Canada was preparing for war with the United States.
“They’re very aware of our resources, of what we have, and they very much want to be able to benefit from those,” Trudeau reportedly said. “But Mr. Trump has it in mind that one of the easiest ways of doing that is absorbing our country. And it is a real thing.”
This week, President Trump promised to move forward with tariffs on Mexico and Canada, sparking further concern among Canadian Disney Parks fans.
Canadians Cancel Disney Vacations Amid Rising Political Tensions
Canadian Disney Parks fans have taken to social media to share their thoughts about the political and economic situation affecting their upcoming vacations. Some are outraged by the state of U.S.-Canada relations, while others see avoiding Disney as a way to protest the tariffs.
“Had two full weeks booked in September,” said u/wasnotwas76. “Now gonna cancel and we are going to Oktoberfest in Germany instead. Costs a bit more but whatever.”
“Not a chance in hell we are going to go now,” u/pvtcowboy97 replied. “We were planning a Halloween trip but going to stay in Canada. We usually go once every year, but since Trump’s dragging of our country—sorry, not sorry. Maybe we will save for Japan next year.”
Others cite the declining value of the Canadian dollar as a significant factor in their decision to cancel upcoming Disney trips.
“We have been considering a trip to California for December, and even though they’re a blue state, it doesn’t feel right to give money to the US with everything that’s happening (the crappy dollar, threats of 51st state, tariffs, mango mussolini…),” u/Certain_Hippo_3046 wrote. “Considering going back to Japan instead, since the dollar and yen are pretty par.”
For some, skipping Disney is about more than just politics—it’s a statement.
“I was considering booking a trip for September 2025,” u/Intelligent-Low6442 commented. “I hadn’t made any reservations or purchased tickets yet and I’m so glad I hadn’t. Now with everything going on; there’s no way I would go. Trumps tariffs, insulting talk of 51st state, FAA issues as well as food inspection (and I’m sure I’m forgetting something else). I’m definitely not comfortable going and I’m not sure I’ll ever go back. For my household; I’m also purchasing Canadian products first then any country but US second wherever possible.”
“We had plans for September. Fly to San Diego, stay near Balboa Park, see the San Diego Zoo. Then we were going to take the Surfliner to Anaheim, stay for 5 days, and visit Disneyland Parks for 3 days,” u/travlynme2 said. “We are not going now. Maybe, never. Hopefully in four years. I am sad this was my bucket list.”
Some Canadians Refuse to Give Up Their Disney Vacations
Not every Canadian Disney Parks fan is willing to let politics and tariffs interfere with their travel plans.
“No, I love WDW,” said u/Msfreedom1. “Nothing going to make me disappoint my kids who I promised to take them this year.”
Others argued that canceling Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort vacations should be a personal choice.
“Most are still going,” u/infinityandbeyond75 claimed. “…Many are saying it doesn’t affect them directly, so their plans are to still go…You just need to decide how you personally handle it. Some say a Disney trip is more worth it to them and some will cancel. Personal preference for everyone.”
Is it wrong for Canadians to visit Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort right now? Share your thoughts with Disney Dining in the comments.
No it’s not wrong it’s the thing to do and not about Disney but about everything US.
If 10% of annual Canadians visitors in the US decide to choose another destination, it represent $2.1 billion lost in the tourism industry in the USA and could cost 140,000 jobs.
Being Canadian I have cancelled my 3 months trip in south western US that I was about to take… and with discussion with friends and neighbors I would think the % is closer to 30-40% than 10%… all because of president Felon who threatens our country, and talks about making us the 51 st state and calling our Premier a Governor… he has no class, he is an idiot and a bully and the entire planet laughs at USA these days and the country laughing the loudest is Russia who knows they are controlling the orange moron.
Now, I am 68 years old, have been travelling to the US very often since I was 6 years old, have visited more than 40 states and I will not go back until Trump is gone…and it’s not only about travelling, it’s also about buying American products. These days in Canada, it’s funny to go to a grocery store, and watch all consumers reading labels to see where the product is from, and when it says USA, people put it back. That’s the result of electing a dangerous idiot, with no vision, making important decisions for a country…
Make America Great Again… my ass.. he is destroying your country big time, to put more money in his and Trump pockets… b attacking a long time friendly neighbor.
Right on
All of the bitter and cranky Canadians can stay up in that hole of a country. They don’t realize that their leader screwed them but it’s OK right. Don’t step foot anywhere on US soil if you don’t like traveling here anymore. Canadians have short term memory so it won’t be long until they book another Disney trip.
You don’t know much about Canadians. Probably couldn’t find us on a map.
You are so right
It’s hard to “be great again” if the rest of the world ignores you. This is what is happening to the United States. The only thing the USA has going for it is its large market. However there are many more people to sell to than the USA. India, China, Brazil, EU, UK, Mexico, Japan, Australia, etc. For a president to not know how tariffs actually work, it’s embarrassing. He has also squandered 40 years of good will towards the United States in 40 days. It will take a century before that good will is restored so I hope you are happy by yourself because the world is moving on without you.
So sad that for so many years the USA and it’s people have always stepped up at the first sign of conflict and have spent trillions in rebuilding countries in need. Now that we would like a little gratitude and respect for our endeavors, we get thrown under the bus by our so called allies. Its ok for everyone else to put they’re countries first and then expect the US to bail them out when they fall short. It’s been that way as long as we have been a nation. But, the American people are tired and feel it’s time for us to come first. WE put President Trump in office. Don’t hate the man for doing what the US hired him to do. We are done being walked on. We don’t want your countries. It’s just time for everyone to step up and pay their fair share. Canadians have always been our friends and neighbors. We want to continue that relationship. But the playing field is new, and let’s give each other a chance at this new game. Who knows? Perhaps it will be better for all of us. Dignity and respect is everyone’s right. That goes for the USA also.
We canceled our trip , hope we can go in 4 years
stick to Disney and stay out of politics
