Busch Gardens Closes Unexpectedly, Turning Away Thousands of Guests

Guests planning to visit Busch Gardens Williamsburg during its festive Christmas Town event were met with disappointment when the park announced an abrupt closure. Known for its thrilling coasters like Pantheon and Apollo’s Chariot and educational animal exhibits, the Virginia theme park temporarily shut its doors on Wednesday, December 11, just hours before it was set to open.

A Sudden Announcement From Busch Gardens Williamsburg

Busch Gardens Williamsburg shared the news with guests through an email and updates on its official website. The park cited “inclement weather” as the reason for the closure, leaving thousands of theme park guests to adjust their plans on short notice.

“Dear Guest, Due to inclement weather, Busch Gardens Williamsburg will be closed today, Dec. 11,” the email read. “All date-specific tickets for Dec. 11 will be automatically extended for use on any operating day through Jan. 5, 2025. We apologize for any inconvenience and look forward to seeing you tomorrow, Dec. 12, from 4 PM-9 PM.”

Weather Creates Challenges

According to The Weather Channel, Williamsburg faced a “marginal risk” of severe weather, including strong winds of 10 to 20 MPH and heavy rainfall. The conditions posed safety concerns for outdoor rides and attractions, prompting Busch Gardens to prioritize guest safety by suspending operations for the day.

Despite the closure, the park reassured guests that all date-specific tickets for December 11 would be honored on any operating day through January 5, 2025. Those with additional questions were encouraged to contact Guest Relations at BGW.GuestRelations@buschgardens.com.

The closure was an unexpected hiccup during Busch Gardens Williamsburg’s beloved Christmas Town event, transforming the park into a winter wonderland with dazzling lights, festive treats, and seasonal entertainment. The park typically remains open throughout December, including on major holidays like Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, making Wednesday’s closure a rare occurrence.

Busch Gardens announced plans to reopen on December 12, with park hours from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., allowing guests to return and enjoy the holiday festivities.

When Theme Parks Close Unexpectedly

While unexpected closures can be frustrating, they are often necessary to ensure the safety of guests and staff. Guests are encouraged to check official park communication channels for updates and to contact Guest Relations with any questions about rescheduling.
