Disney Begins Replacing 44-Year-Old Roller Coaster, Photo Confirms

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is getting a major overhaul at Magic Kingdom Park, marking the most extensive refurbishment in its history. As crews work behind construction walls, new photos reveal that Walt Disney World Resort has officially started replacing parts of the 44-year-old roller coaster.

A Frontierland Classic Undergoes a Transformation

Since its debut in November 1980, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has been a cornerstone of Frontierland. The high-speed mine train coaster is beloved for its twists, turns, and rugged terrain, offering guests a thrilling adventure through the Old West. Over the years, the ride has undergone multiple refurbishments, but none as extensive as the one currently underway.

Last year, Disney announced that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad would close on January 6, 2025, for a year-long refurbishment, with plans to reopen in 2026. While the company has remained vague about specific updates, evidence suggests that the ride‘s track is being completely replaced.

New Track, New Experience?

Recent photos captured by Fantasyland News confirm that Disney has begun swapping out sections of the original steel track. They shared this photo of a piece of roller coaster track arriving at Magic Kindom Park on Instagram:

The outlet noted that the new track appears significantly wider than the previous version, with a reinforced center beam that could indicate structural enhancements. While Disney has not confirmed if the ride’s movement will change, some speculate that a smoother experience could be on the way.

For decades, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has been known for its bumpy, unpredictable ride—a feature that some Disney Park guests have credited with helping them pass kidney stones. A scientific study even supported the theory that the coaster’s rough terrain could assist in dislodging small stones.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad’s overhaul is part of a broader transformation at Magic Kingdom Park. Disney is also developing a highly anticipated Disney Villains land in the area “Beyond Big Thunder.” Additionally, two Cars (2006) attractions are set to replace Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America. Walt Disney World Resort has not shared an official opening timeline for these projects.
