Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Will Close on Its 46th Anniversary at Disneyland

September 1, 2025, marks the last chance for guests to ride Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Disneyland Park before the attraction enters a lengthy refurbishment.

Disneyland Resort announced last month that the roller coaster would close on September 2—coinciding with its 46th anniversary in Frontierland. Unlike many maintenance projects at the Disney parks, this refurbishment currently has no announced end date. The Southern California theme park’s operational calendar runs through October 13, 2025, and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is still marked as “no times available” on that date.

On Monday, a Reddit post from u/NaiRad1000 sparked conversations about the extended attraction closure. Many Disney Parks fans were disappointed to see another Disneyland Resort ride close indefinitely.

Today is the Last day to ride Thunder Mountain before it refurbishment

“Really wondering how long this refurbishment will pan out to,” u/GoldenOPx commented. “Hopefully not too long so that it’ll be up for the holiday season.”

“We’re sad because we weren’t expecting this to be done and are going the 2nd week of October,” u/kris1230 added. “It seems like a weird time of year to close it for refurbishment.”

Not all Disney Parks fans were disappointed, however. Some felt the classic attraction had run its course.

“This ride is always down and still as painful since the 90s,” said u/Old_Warthog_3515. “Get rid of it.”

Disneyland Resort isn’t alone in giving its Frontierland mine train a makeover. Walt Disney World Resort closed its Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in January for a year-long refurbishment, promising “new magic” when the roller coaster reopens in early 2026. Over the past several months, Magic Kingdom Park guests have already seen crews repaint set pieces and replace nearly the entire steel track.

It’s unclear whether Disneyland Resort will make similar updates to its version of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Stay tuned for more information about the ride’s refurbishment and reopening date!
