The Great Muppet Shuffle: Hollywood Studios Transformation Hits High Gear as Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Reopening News Looms

Disney’s Hollywood Studios is currently the epicenter of the most ambitious transformation in Walt Disney World history. While the park has long been a favorite for thrill-seekers and film buffs, the 2026 construction season has turned the “studios” into a literal workshop of progress. As of mid-March, two massive projects have effectively swapped the park’s DNA: the arrival of Monstropolis at the back of the park and the Muppet takeover of Sunset Boulevard.

While the “what” and the “where” have been confirmed, the entire Disney community is now holding its breath for the “when.” With the Muppets officially set to headline their first-ever high-speed thrill ride, all eyes are on the massive guitar at the end of Sunset Boulevard as a major announcement regarding the reopening date is expected any day now.

The Move to Sunset Blvd: Waiting for the Electric Mayhem

It is no longer a rumor: the Muppets are officially taking over the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster. After over two decades of Aerosmith’s high-octane rock, the Electric Mayhem is moving in to bring a new, chaotic beat to Sunset Boulevard.

The Pending Announcement

While the retheme was confirmed earlier this year, the attraction has remained behind construction walls as part of an extensive transformation. The giant guitar facade is currently shrouded in scaffolding, and crews have been spotted working on the exterior signage. The question on every guest’s mind is when will it open?

Industry experts and park insiders are signaling that a definitive announcement of a reopening date is imminent. With the spring season in full swing and the summer travel rush approaching, Disney is expected to pull back the curtain on the “Muppet-fied” coaster’s debut very soon. This reopening is seen as a vital capacity win for the park, especially as other sections undergo heavy construction.

What to Expect from the New Experience

While we wait for the date, the retheme details are already sparking excitement. The coaster will feature the Muppets—specifically Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem—as they race through the streets of Hollywood to make it to their biggest gig yet. Expect a new, high-fidelity soundtrack, updated digital “on-ride” gags, and potentially some of the most advanced Muppet animatronics ever seen in a Disney park.

Monstropolis Rising: The End of Muppets Courtyard

As the Muppets prepare to move to the front of the park, their former home is being systematically dismantled to make room for Monsters, Inc. Land (Monstropolis). This marks the first time the world of Mike and Sulley will be represented as a full-scale immersive land in a Disney park.

The Scream Cycle Door Coaster Construction

The area previously known as Muppets Courtyard is currently a maze of green construction walls. The most significant progress is seen at the former MuppetVision 3D* theater. The interior is being gutted to provide the footprint for the Scream Cycle Door Coaster.

This anchor attraction is a suspended coaster that will mimic the “door vault” chase from the original film. Recent site activity suggests that the foundation work for the coaster’s unique hanging track is well underway. The industrial, urban aesthetic of Monstropolis is already beginning to peek over the construction walls, with the warm brick of the old theater being replaced by the metallic, energy-focused architecture of the monster world.

Dining Transformations: From Pizza to Potstickers?

The makeover extends to the dining locations as well. PizzeRizzo is currently closed and behind walls. While Disney has not officially confirmed the new menu, the prevailing belief is that the location will be rethemed into Harryhausen’s, the famous monster-world restaurant. This shift is part of a larger effort to ensure that every square inch of the new land is fully integrated into the Monsters, Inc. lore.

The Strategic “Shuffle”: Why the Wait Will Be Worth It

To many fans, the closure of Muppet*Vision 3D was a bittersweet moment, but the “Great Muppet Shuffle” is a strategic masterpiece in park layout.

  1. Iconic IP on Sunset Blvd: Placing the Muppets on Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster gives the franchise a high-profile, permanent home that fits the “Classic Hollywood” vibe of the entrance and Sunset Boulevard.
  2. Increased Capacity: By adding the Door Coaster to the back of the park, Disney is effectively creating a new “E-Ticket” anchor that will help pull crowds away from Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and Toy Story Land.
  3. Modernizing the Thrills: Replacing the aging Aerosmith licensing with a core Disney/Muppet IP ensures that the coaster can be updated and promoted with new content for decades without the risk of expiring contracts.

Guest Survival Guide: Hollywood Studios 2026

If you are visiting the park this spring, keep these construction milestones in mind:

  • Sunset Boulevard bottleneck: Expect heavy crowds near the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster courtyard as fans gather to see the progress. Once the reopening date is announced, expect “virtual queue” rumors to follow.
  • Grand Avenue access: Access to Star Tours and Galaxy’s Edge remains open, but the walkway through the old Muppets Courtyard is now a dead end. Use the main entrance to Batuu near Toy Story Land for the easiest transit.
  • Announcement Watch: Keep your eyes on the Disney Parks social channels. The news regarding the Muppet coaster’s first “launch” is expected to drop before the end of the month.

Conclusion

The era of “Muppets Courtyard” may be over, but the era of the Muppets as the kings of Hollywood Studios thrills is just beginning. As Monstropolis takes shape in the back, the Electric Mayhem is tuning their instruments on Sunset Blvd. The only piece of the puzzle missing is the date—and if current park activity is any indication, that wait is almost over.
