Disney World Confirms Major Expedition Everest Changes, Guests Already Feeling Impact

Guests heading to Disney’s Animal Kingdom are discovering that one of the park’s biggest attractions isn’t operating quite the way it used to.

Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain remains a favorite among thrill seekers, but recent changes have eliminated a convenient option that helped visitors avoid lengthy waits.

And that’s only part of what’s happening.

Disney has also announced plans for a major update to the attraction’s most recognizable feature, potentially setting the stage for a much larger refurbishment.

Expedition Everest Loses Popular Free Guest Option

For years, Expedition Everest offered something that many other Walt Disney World attractions didn’t: a dedicated Single Rider line.

The option allowed guests willing to ride separately from their families or groups to fill empty seats on departing trains.

For solo travelers and visitors hoping to ride multiple times, it was a convenient way to experience the coaster without purchasing Lightning Lane access.

Unfortunately, that option is no longer available.

On September 21, 2026, Expedition Everest stopped offering its Single Rider queue.

The change followed adjustments to how Cast Members organize guests before boarding.

According to Kenny the Pirate, Cast Members began directing even-numbered parties to one side of the final holding area and odd-numbered parties to the other.

This system reduces the number of empty seats that need to be filled, making the Single Rider queue less necessary.

While the adjustment may improve boarding efficiency, it also removes a popular free option for guests.

Visitors now have to use the regular standby queue or purchase Lightning Lane access when available.

Considering Disney World’s recent price increases, losing another way to save time without spending extra money may frustrate some vacationers.

Disney World Announces Another Major Expedition Everest Change

Meanwhile, Disney is preparing to address an issue that has affected Expedition Everest for years.

The attraction’s enormous Yeti animatronic has remained largely motionless for nearly two decades because of technical problems.

Instead of moving toward passing trains as originally intended, the figure relies on flashing lights to create the appearance of movement.

However, Disney Experiences Chairman Thomas Mazloum recently confirmed plans to bring the Yeti back to life.

Former Imagineer Joe Rohde has since suggested that Disney intends to replace the existing animatronic entirely.

That could mean a significant refurbishment is coming.

Replacing the Yeti would likely require substantial work inside the mountain, potentially leading to a temporary coaster closure.

Disney has not announced an official shutdown date or confirmed how long any refurbishment might last.

For now, Expedition Everest remains available to guests, although its Single Rider option has disappeared.

With Disney’s Animal Kingdom already preparing for major additions in 2027, visitors should keep watching for further announcements.

The return of a fully functioning Yeti could be an exciting development, but guests may have to deal with additional disruptions before that long-awaited moment arrives.

Andrew Boardwine

A frequent visitor of Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort, Andrew will likely be found freefalling on Twilight Zone Tower of Terror or enjoying Pirates of the Caribbean. Over at Universal, he'll be taking in the thrills of the Jurassic World Velocicoaster and Revenge of the Mummy
