Disney World to Replace, Not Fix, the Yeti From Expedition Everest

New Comment From Former Imagineer Shocks Industry

Former Walt Disney Imagineer and Disney Legend Joe Rohde says Walt Disney World is preparing an Expedition Everest Yeti replacement—not a repair—for the famous figure inside Disney’s Animal Kingdom. That distinction could mean the end of the original Audio-Animatronic that has occupied the Forbidden Mountain since the attraction’s early years, even as Disney promises to bring the creature “back to life.”

Rohde made the statement during an interview with the Welcome Home Podcast while discussing his book Floating Mountains. Disney itself has not publicly confirmed that the existing figure will be removed and replaced, creating an important gap between Rohde’s account and the company’s official announcement.

Joe Rohde Says the Expedition Everest Yeti Will Be Replaced

During the interview, Rohde addressed the long-running question of whether Imagineers could restore the original Yeti. His answer was unusually direct: “To be clear, they are going to replace the Yeti.” He added that if Disney could fix the figure, it would have done so.

Rohde also limited what he claimed to know. He said he does not know exactly what the replacement will do, only that the team believes it has found a solution. That makes this an attributed disclosure from a former Imagineer closely associated with Expedition Everest, not a Disney announcement detailing the project’s engineering scope.

The distinction matters because Disney’s August announcement was broader. At D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, Disney Experiences Chairman Thomas Mazloum announced that the company is “bringing the Yeti back to life” inside Expedition Everest, as Inside the Magic reported following the announcement. Disney’s official Parks Blog announcement did not specify whether accomplishing that would preserve the existing figure or replace it.

The Original Yeti Could Be Nearing Its End

For longtime Walt Disney World fans, replacing the figure carries a different weight than repairing it. The Yeti isn’t merely decoration at the end of the coaster; it is the physical payoff to a story that begins in Expedition Everest’s queue and follows riders into the mountain.

Disney’s official Expedition Everest attraction page describes a journey through a Tibetan village, damaged track and encounters with the mythical creature guarding the Forbidden Mountain. Rohde, meanwhile, was the overall creative executive and supervising designer for Disney’s Animal Kingdom, including Expedition Everest, according to The Walt Disney Company’s profile of the Disney Legend.

Inside the Magic has previously covered Expedition Everest’s broken effects and stationary Yeti, including the fan nickname “Disco Yeti” for the lighting-assisted version of the encounter. The attraction’s most famous creature has therefore spent much of its existence unable to deliver the sweeping physical encounter associated with its original design.

If Rohde’s information reflects Disney’s final engineering plan, restoring that intended story beat will require replacing the existing figure. That would transform what many fans understood as a long-awaited repair into the physical replacement of one of modern Imagineering’s most recognizable creations.

Why Disney May Need a New Yeti Instead of a Repair

Rohde’s comments also fit something he has said publicly before: the Yeti problem was never as simple as sending technicians into the mountain and repairing a broken machine. In 2023, he described the challenge as an intersection of finance, operations, timing, engineering, design, marketing and guest satisfaction, saying solutions existed but opportunities did not, as Inside the Magic reported at the time.

That context helps explain why a replacement could become the practical answer after years of inaction. Expedition Everest remains an operating Animal Kingdom headliner, and any major intervention must account for both the attraction and the complicated environment surrounding the figure.

What remains unknown is just as important. Disney has not published specifications for a replacement Yeti, announced what technology it would use, or said whether its motion would duplicate the original figure. There is also no verified evidence that Disney intends to install a cheaper or simplified substitute.

Animal Kingdom Is Already in a Period of Major Change

The possible loss of the original Yeti arrives while Disney’s Animal Kingdom is undergoing a broader transformation. Inside the Magic has tracked the park’s 2026 attraction closures as well as the larger construction-era changes reshaping Animal Kingdom, while Expedition Everest remains one of the park’s principal thrill attractions.

That makes the Yeti project unusually consequential. Disney is not replacing Expedition Everest or announcing a new intellectual-property overlay for the coaster. Instead, it is revisiting a defining effect inside an existing attraction while other areas of Animal Kingdom are being substantially reshaped.

Disney’s decision to address the Yeti also follows years of discussion about the figure’s condition. More recently, Inside the Magic documented the wait for details following Disney’s D23 Yeti announcement. Disney still has not announced a closure date for Expedition Everest, a construction schedule, or a reopening date connected specifically to the Yeti project.

For guests, that means there is currently no confirmed vacation-planning change tied to this work.

What Happens to the Expedition Everest Yeti Next?

The central question has now changed. For years, fans asked whether Disney would ever make the Yeti move again. Disney has finally committed to bringing the creature back to life; Rohde now says achieving that goal means replacing the Yeti rather than repairing the famous existing figure.

Until Walt Disney World clarifies the discrepancy, the replacement should not be treated as officially confirmed by Disney. Rohde’s history with Animal Kingdom makes his statement significant, but he retired from Disney in 2021 and is not publicly identified as a member of the current Yeti project.

Disney also has not said what would happen to the existing figure if it is removed. Whether it could be preserved, displayed elsewhere, dismantled, or handled another way remains unknown.

That leaves Expedition Everest on the edge of a potentially major Imagineering transition: Disney has promised that the attraction’s legendary monster will live again, but if Rohde’s information proves accurate, the Yeti that finally moves may no longer be the celebrated original waiting inside the Forbidden Mountain.
