After Only a Few Months, Disney Makes Major Change to the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets

Ever since Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets officially debuted at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the revamped attraction has been drawing massive crowds. Blending the high-speed thrill of a launched roller coaster with the chaotic musical energy of Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem, the ride has quickly cemented itself as one of the park’s premier headliners.

However, the ride’s overwhelming popularity has brought a familiar theme park headache to the forefront: guests pulling out smartphones and cameras to film point-of-view (POV) videos during the ride.

To combat loose-article hazards and prevent unexpected ride shutdowns, Walt Disney World has implemented a targeted operational change. Guests queuing up at the coaster have noticed a newly created efficiency-and-safety cast member position stationed inside the load building. Assigned directly in front of the vehicle gates, this cast member’s sole focus is enforcing pre-boarding rules, directing riders to remove bags early, and making sure phones are completely stowed before trains move into the launch bay.

Here is why Disney instituted this new station role, how it prevents unexpected downtime, and what it means for your next trip to Hollywood Studios.

The Filming Dilemma: Why Loose Phones Trigger E-Stops

To appreciate why Disney is clamping down on phone usage, it helps to look at the extreme physics powering Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster.

The attraction catapults riders from 0 to 57 mph in just 2.8 seconds using a linear induction motor (LIM) launch system. Immediately after blasting out of the station, the coaster enters a pitch-black indoor building featuring three inversions—a sea serpent roll and a corkscrew—all set to a loud, pulse-pounding Muppet soundtrack.

When a guest pulls out a phone or camera on a ride with this level of intensity, several severe issues arise:

  • High-Speed Projectiles: At nearly 60 mph, a dropped phone becomes a dangerous flying object. If a device slips from a rider’s hand during an inversion, it can strike guests seated in the rear rows at high speed.
  • Track and Sensor Interference: Loose objects that fall from train cars can land on sensitive track components or trigger optical safety sensors throughout the layout.
  • Mandatory Emergency Stops: The launch track and station are continuously monitored by high-definition cameras. If an operator in the control booth sees a rider holding a phone as a vehicle enters the launch position, they must immediately initiate a launch hold or an emergency stop (E-stop).

When a coaster suffers an emergency stop, the entire attraction comes to a halt. Clearing a launched coaster after an E-stop involves resetting safety zones, cycling empty test trains, and conducting safety checks—a process that often takes 20 to 45 minutes and sends wait times soaring.

Inside the New Loading Station Role

To prevent non-compliant behavior before trains even reach the launch zone, Disney introduced a dedicated cast member position at the boarding gates.

In the past, load Cast Members had to split their focus between assigning seats, checking overhead shoulder restraints, and shouting bag instructions over the loud station music. The new efficiency position separates these duties, creating a dedicated checkpoint focused exclusively on pre-boarding preparation.

While standing in front of the boarding rows, the cast member assigned to this role actively manages three key steps:

  1. Early Bag Removal: Riders are instructed to remove backpacks, cross-body bags, and purses while standing behind the gates—well before the coaster train arrives in the station.
  2. Mandatory Phone Stowage: Guests holding phones, cameras, or vlogging rigs are given direct verbal instructions to place them in zipped pockets, bags, or the vehicle’s interior storage pouches.
  3. Queue Gate Readiness: The cast member confirms that parties are standing in their correct row lines and ready to step across the platform swiftly as soon as the gates open.

By forcing guests to strip off their bags while waiting behind the gates, the new position eliminates the usual bottleneck of riders struggling to take off backpacks as they step into the narrow coaster car. More importantly, face-to-face phone enforcement ensures riders understand that filming is strictly prohibited before the vehicle pulls out toward the launch zone.

How the Change Keeps the Line Moving

While additional boarding instructions might seem like extra red tape, this safety role actually creates a much smoother experience for everyone waiting in line.

  • Faster Train Dispatches: When guests board with bags in hand and phones already secured in pockets, loading takes significantly less time. Faster train dispatches mean higher overall hourly capacity.
  • Fewer Operational Delays: Catching phone usage at the gate prevents riders from pulling out devices in the launch bay, drastically reducing tide holds and E-stops.
  • Sharper Restraint Checks: Load Cast Members checking shoulder harnesses can focus 100% on vehicle safety without distractions from guests holding loose items.

How to Prepare Before You Board

If you are planning to ride Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets on your next Disney World vacation, following a few quick habits will help keep the line moving fast:

  • Stow Devices Early: As soon as you enter the indoor queue alleyway, zip your phone, sunglasses, and loose items safely inside your bag or pockets.
  • Hold Bags in Hand: Have your backpack or purse off your shoulders and ready in your hands before the boarding gates open.
  • Use Vehicle Floor Storage: Once inside the car, place large bags flat on the floor between your feet and loop a leg through the strap. Small items can go into the mesh pouch in front of your seat.

By establishing a dedicated safety position in the station, Disney is taking a proactive step to protect riders, eliminate unnecessary downtime, and keep the Muppets’ musical coaster rolling smoothly all day long.
