First Responders Spotted on Disney Cruise Line’s Castaway Cay on September 13
A helicopter medical evacuation unfolded at Castaway Cay, Disney Cruise Line’s private island, after a passenger aboard the Disney Wish required urgent treatment during a recent sailing.
A Passenger’s Account of the Emergency
The incident came to light when Reddit user u/codenameoxcart shared photos of the helicopter and its crew on Monday, documenting what they witnessed firsthand. Out of respect for the guest‘s privacy, the user chose not to photograph the individual being evacuated or the Disney cast members assisting them.

The passenger involved was evacuated due to suspected heat stroke. Disney cast members and paramedics worked together to move the patient from a Disney-owned stretcher onto the helicopter’s equipment, after which the aircraft transported them to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for treatment.
“Taking nothing away from the individual needing assistance, but it was pretty damn cool to see the logistics behind something like this that you don’t see every day,” the Reddit user wrote. “…Medevac crew had 2 pilots and 2 paramedics/EMTs. Pilots got a good photo op with the Wish in the background while waiting for the transfer.”
How Disney Cruise Line Handled the Situation
The same user later praised the ship’s crew for how they communicated with passengers during the emergency, striking a balance between keeping guests informed and protecting the patient’s privacy.
“Captain did well to inform everyone and the safety team looked on it,” they said. “It was a pretty eventful cruise for the crew in that regard.”
A second witness, u/efferstine, offered additional details about the evacuation process, noting some difficulty paramedics faced getting the stretcher to the helicopter.
“I was on that sailing too! And watched the whole thing unfold while eating a soft serve from Deck 11,” they wrote. “Made me wonder why they had steps going up to the helipad instead of a ramp, they looked like they struggled getting the stretcher up.”
When This Took Place
The evacuation happened during a three-night Halloween on the High Seas sailing aboard the Disney Wish. The ship departed Port Canaveral, Florida, on September 11, stopped in Nassau, Bahamas, on September 12, visited Disney Castaway Cay on September 13, and returned to Port Canaveral on September 14. Based on that schedule, the medevac took place on Sunday, September 13.
