According to display signage, the attraction will open with a brand-new prologue inspired by the classic 1964 television special Disneyland Goes to the World’s Fair. Through the magic of advanced Audio-Animatronics technology, guests will step onto a virtual TV soundstage, where Walt Disney himself personally introduces the Carousel of Progress. When Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress debuted at the 1964–1965 New York World’s Fair, its strength lay in presenting technological leaps that living audiences remembered firsthand—from gas lamps to electric lighting. However, over the decades, the first three scenes remained permanently locked in the early 1900s, the 1920s, and the 1940s.
The 2027 reimagining shifts the entire timeline forward to reflect eras that contemporary guests, parents, and grandparents experienced themselves:
- Act I (1969): The story opens during the historic Apollo 11 moon landing. On display inside Walt Disney Presents, John (Father) wears a bright yellow sweater, a multicolored turtleneck, and khaki pants. An accompanying display sign notes that John’s Act I costume draws direct inspiration from his outfit in the Act IV finale of the original 1964–1965 New York World’s Fair Progressland show.
- Act II (1985): Set during an 80s-era Halloween, this scene brings radical mid-1980s home computers and pop-culture gadgets into the living room. For the first time in attraction history, Mother (Sarah) takes center stage to lead the scene’s narrative.
- Act III (1999): The family prepares for New Year’s Eve on the brink of Y2K, highlighting late-90s consumer electronics, early dial-up internet setups, and pre-millennium optimism.
- Act IV (Distant Future): Replaces the outdated 1990s/2000s living room with an off-planet futuristic environment inspired by legendary Disney Imagineer John Hench. On display at Hollywood Studios, Sarah wears a yellow-and-blue futuristic dress over beige pants, combining future-forward synthetic materials with classic silhouettes. A companion scale diorama shows Sarah seated in a chair before a sunken conversation pit and a futuristic fireplace.
Star-Studded Voice Cast and Core Legacy Character Returns
To bring the updated family to life, Disney has tapped Hollywood royalty. Emmy Award-winning actor Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad, Malcolm in the Middle) assumes the voice role of John (Father), taking over the role previously voiced by Jean Shepherd.
