New aerial photography reveals just how extensively Universal Orlando Resort has torn into Jurassic Park River Adventure, offering the clearest look yet at a refurbishment that’s kept the prehistoric-themed water ride closed for the better part of a year.
A Refurbishment Shrouded in Rumors
Jurassic Park River Adventure has been closed since January 5, 2026, and isn’t expected to reopen until November 20, 2026. Speculation about the project’s true scope began almost immediately, with some Universal Parks fans wondering whether the Central Florida attraction might follow Universal Studios Hollywood’s lead by transforming into Jurassic World: The Ride, a rebrand that park completed back in 2019.
Universal Orlando Resort has never addressed those Jurassic World (2015) rumors directly, and aerial photos captured throughout the summer suggest the ride is simply undergoing extensive maintenance rather than a full thematic overhaul, keeping its original Jurassic Park (1993) theming intact.
The ride’s age likely explains the lengthy timeline. Jurassic Park River Adventure first opened in 1999, and its audio-animatronic technology requires ongoing upkeep to remain safe and functional. Water rides also endure more wear and tear than dry attractions, a challenge compounded by the fact that several sections of this particular ride are exposed to the outdoor elements.
What the Latest Photos Reveal
Aerial photographer and X user @bioreconstruct shared an extensive set of images on Sunday documenting the outdoor portions of the ride during the ongoing refurbishment.
One batch of photos shows a partially disassembled dinosaur animatronic positioned beside the drained ride path in Ultrasaur Lagoon, captioned:
