Something unusual is happening on Skull Island at Universal Orlando Resort.
Skull Island: Reign of Kong remains unavailable at Islands of Adventure after weeks of unexpected downtime. Universal hasn’t provided an official explanation for the extended closure or announced when guests can expect the attraction to return.
Now, attention is turning toward the massive King Kong animatronic that provides the ride’s finale.
An unverified report claims the figure caught fire while crews were performing repairs. Universal hasn’t confirmed the report, so exactly what happened inside the attraction remains unclear.
But depending on Kong’s condition, the ride could eventually look different when—or if—it returns.
Skull Island Has Always Been a Divisive Attraction
Skull Island: Reign of Kong debuted in July 2016 and immediately stood apart from many traditional Universal attractions.
Guests board huge trackless expedition vehicles before traveling through physical environments and screen-based scenes filled with creatures.
The attraction concludes with its most impressive physical effect.
An enormous King Kong animatronic waits near the end, giving guests an up-close encounter with the character. The figure stands approximately three stories tall and measures 18 feet across the shoulders.
Without Kong, the finale would lose one of the attraction’s most memorable physical elements.
That’s why Universal’s eventual solution could matter so much.
What Could Universal Do With King Kong?
Repairing the existing animatronic appears to be the least dramatic possibility.
If the reported incident caused repairable damage, Universal could complete the necessary work and reopen Skull Island largely unchanged.
If repairing Kong isn’t practical, Universal could potentially install a replacement physical figure instead.
The more controversial possibility would involve eliminating the animatronic completely.
Universal could theoretically replace Kong with a screen-based finale. That solution could avoid maintaining another enormous physical figure, but it would almost certainly generate debate among fans.
Reign of Kong already features several major screen sequences. Removing its giant animatronic would take away one of the physical elements that separates the finale from everything guests just experienced.
A Bigger Replacement Is Another Possibility
Universal could also choose a much more dramatic route: replacing Skull Island: Reign of Kong entirely.
That would be considerably more expensive than repairing or replacing an animatronic. A new attraction would require a much larger investment and potentially years of development and construction.
Still, some fans might welcome the opportunity to see Universal introduce something completely different to Islands of Adventure.
There’s currently no confirmation that Universal plans to permanently close Skull Island.
The attraction remains listed as part of the park, and Universal hasn’t announced a replacement project.
That means the eventual outcome could still be straightforward: repair Kong and reopen.
But after weeks of unexplained downtime and growing questions about its massive finale, Skull Island suddenly has a much more uncertain future than it did just a few weeks ago.
