Halloween Horror Nights asks scare actors to get closer to guests than performers at almost any other theme park event. That can create unforgettable encounters, but it can also create problems when guests take those interactions too far.
Universal appears to be paying particularly close attention to that issue in 2026.
At Universal Orlando Resort, Art the Clown remains a major draw after his roaming appearances last year attracted huge crowds and problematic guest behavior. Across the country, Universal Studios Hollywood has another character attracting attention with Nikki from Obsession (2026).
While the situations aren’t identical, videos and guest reports suggest Universal is putting clearer boundaries around certain high-demand performers.
Art the Clown Created Problems Last Year
Art became one of Halloween Horror Nights’ biggest character draws at Universal Orlando Resort in 2025.
Crowds regularly gathered around him as he moved through the park, but some interactions reportedly crossed the line.
Guests allegedly touched and grabbed the performer, while others reportedly cornered or chased him. There were also reports of guests shining lights directly into his face.
Art’s props weren’t always left alone, either. Reports indicated that some guests interfered with them or even attempted to take them.
What started as excitement surrounding an extremely popular character became a difficult situation to manage. It also raised questions about how Universal could continue offering these encounters without putting performers in uncomfortable or potentially unsafe situations.
Those concerns haven’t disappeared in 2026.
Nikki Brings Similar Concerns to Hollywood
This year’s attention isn’t limited to Orlando.
Universal Studios Hollywood announced Nikki from Obsession (2026) as a roaming character for Halloween Horror Nights, immediately giving fans another high-profile performer to find during the event.
The announcement generated excitement, but Art’s experience in Orlando also gave fans reasons to worry.
Nikki and Art aren’t appearing in the same park or operating under identical circumstances. Still, fans questioned whether Hollywood guests would respect the performer or whether large crowds could create similar problems.
Videos from this year’s event show Universal isn’t leaving certain interactions completely uncontrolled.
Security Remains Close to Certain Performers
Guest-recorded videos from Halloween Horror Nights show security personnel remaining extremely close during some character interactions.
That positioning allows Universal to react quickly if a guest starts interfering with a performer or an interaction becomes unsafe.
It doesn’t eliminate what makes roaming characters exciting. Guests can still unexpectedly encounter performers rather than only seeing them inside haunted houses.
However, the setup creates a clearer boundary between enjoying the character and interfering with the person performing the role.
Universal also appears to use other methods to control certain encounters.
Nikki’s Appearances Have Clear Boundaries
Videos from Universal Studios Hollywood frequently show a rope or barrier between Nikki and guests during certain appearances.
The barrier isn’t present during every interaction, but several encounters appear designed to prevent guests from immediately surrounding the performer. Security also remains nearby during many appearances.
Art has a different setup at Universal Orlando this year.
Rather than simply repeating his 2025 roaming format, Art appears as part of Downtown Clowntown.
That doesn’t mean Universal has created one companywide policy for roaming scare actors. Orlando and Hollywood operate differently, and individual performers can have different procedures.
Still, these examples suggest Universal is being more deliberate about managing interactions with characters likely to attract significant crowds.

Halloween Horror Nights Offers Different Houses on Each Coast
Beyond the roaming characters, both parks have major haunted-house lineups.
Five houses appear at both Universal Orlando and Universal Studios Hollywood: Stranger Things 5, Sinners, Hellraiser, Evil Dead Burn, and Ozzy Osbourne: Prince of Darkness.
Orlando also offers five exclusive houses: Jack & Oddfellow: Chaos & Control, INVASION: Alien Abduction, H.R. Bloodengutz Presents: A Halloween Fright-Tacular!, MADLANDS: Caged Cannibals, and Cybergoria.
Hollywood’s three exclusive houses are Killer Klowns From Outer Space, KILLceañera: Music by SLASH, and Dead, Deader, Deadest.
Art also stars in Hollywood’s Terror Tram while appearing in Orlando’s Downtown Clowntown. Nikki, meanwhile, remains specific to Universal Studios Hollywood.
Universal Appears More Protective in 2026
Halloween Horror Nights works because performers make guests feel as if danger could be lurking around any corner.
The performers themselves shouldn’t have to feel endangered.
Art’s experience in Orlando last year demonstrated how quickly excitement surrounding a popular character can become difficult to control.
With Art drawing attention in Orlando and Nikki doing the same in Hollywood, Universal appears to be approaching these encounters more cautiously.
Visible security, barriers during certain interactions, and more controlled appearances all point toward increased attention to performer safety.
Universal hasn’t announced one companywide policy governing every roaming scare actor, and procedures differ between the two parks.
Guests can still enjoy close encounters with Halloween Horror Nights characters. Universal simply appears less willing to let those encounters cross the line.
