The countdown has officially reached its final days for Fast & Furious – Supercharged.
Universal Studios Florida will permanently close the controversial attraction after August 16, bringing an early end to a ride that struggled to win over many guests. Universal accelerated the closure, leaving anyone who still wants one final ride with very little time.
But losing Supercharged isn’t the most interesting part of this story.
Universal hasn’t announced what will eventually take over the space. With several familiar movie franchises continuing to receive attention around the resort, its replacement could allow Universal to bring a recognizable property back into the parks.
Supercharged Is Reaching the End of the Road
Fast & Furious – Supercharged will welcome its final riders on August 16, then permanently close on August 17.
The Fast & Furious franchise isn’t disappearing from Universal Studios Florida, however.
Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift is already under construction elsewhere in the park, allowing Universal to deliver the speed many guests originally expected from a Fast & Furious attraction.
Supercharged went in a very different direction.
Guests boarded a large party bus and traveled through an experience that relied heavily on screens and increasingly wild action sequences. For a franchise built around street racing, fast cars, and high-speed chases, the attraction never really delivered that same feeling.
Hollywood Drift should offer a dramatically different approach. The outdoor roller coaster will focus on drifting vehicles and high-speed action.
With a new Fast & Furious attraction coming, Universal can retire Supercharged while keeping the franchise represented inside the park.
That leaves another question: What happens to Supercharged’s sizable location in the San Francisco area?
Could Back to the Future Race Back Into Universal?
One possibility could have fans yelling, “Great Scott!”
Back to the Future (1985) already has a lengthy history with Universal Studios Florida.
Back to the Future: The Ride once offered guests a time-travel adventure before permanently closing in 2007. Nearly two decades later, the franchise remains highly recognizable.
Universal has also continued embracing nostalgia throughout its parks. The Universal Mega Movie Parade celebrates recognizable films from different eras, while retro merchandise keeps familiar properties in front of guests.
A modern Back to the Future attraction could take the old idea in a completely different direction. Imagine boarding a DeLorean-inspired ride vehicle before racing through Hill Valley, California, and jumping through time. Universal could combine physical sets, projections, practical effects, and high-speed ride elements to create a much more modern adventure.
Supercharged already sits in the San Francisco section of Universal Studios Florida, giving Universal a California setting to build around.
Of course, Marty McFly and Doc Brown aren’t the only characters who could potentially take over.
Twisters Could Bring Tornadoes Back
Another rumored possibility involves Twisters (2024).
The film follows Kate Carter and Tyler Owens, two characters who could provide an easy setup for a theme park attraction built around storm chasing.
Universal could send guests alongside Kate and Tyler as they track a dangerous tornado. Riders could eventually find themselves caught in its path before helping the team deploy experimental technology against the storm.
That concept could allow Universal to create an attraction packed with physical effects.
Wind, water, debris, screens, moving vehicles, and detailed sets could make guests feel like they’re riding directly into dangerous weather.
There is also plenty of Universal history behind the idea.
Twister…Ride It Out operated at Universal Studios Florida from 1998 until 2015. A new Twisters (2024) attraction could bring storm chasing back to the park with newer characters and modern technology.
But Supercharged isn’t the only Universal attraction involved in speculation.
Could Ghostbusters Take Over Men in Black?
Men in Black: Alien Attack has also appeared in conversations about Universal’s future.
The interactive attraction currently sends guests through New York City, where riders blast aliens and compete for high scores.
Ghostbusters could theoretically fit that formula surprisingly well.
Instead of hunting aliens, guests could target ghosts throughout the city. Universal could build the experience around proton packs, paranormal creatures, recognizable Ghostbusters locations, and a competitive scoring system.
It would represent a major transformation for the longtime attraction, and Universal has announced nothing to suggest that such a project will definitely happen.
For now, it remains another possible way Universal could bring an older movie property into the future.
Universal’s Next Move Remains a Mystery
Fast & Furious – Supercharged has only five days remaining, but the future of its location could remain a mystery much longer.
Back to the Future (1985) could return with a modern time-traveling adventure. Twisters (2024) could bring storm chasing back to Universal Studios Florida. Ghostbusters could eventually find another home inside the park.
None of those projects are confirmed.
What is confirmed is that Supercharged’s controversial run is almost finished.
Regardless of what Universal eventually puts in its place, we’re happy to see the park moving forward. Now comes the exciting part: finding out what Universal decides to replace it with.
