U.S. Government Updates Travel Warning as Disney Cruise Line Guests Restructure Vacation Plans

The turquoise water will look the same from the ship. Nassau’s busy cruise terminal will still receive vacationers, and The Bahamas has not been placed under a “do not travel” order.

But passengers stepping ashore are being asked to look beyond the postcard.

The U.S. State Department updated its Bahamas Travel Advisory on July 28, 2026, retaining the country at Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution because of crime. The department says the advisory level and risk indicators did not change, but its revised summary gives travelers more pointed guidance about violent crime, beaches, independent watercraft operators, firearms, and other risks that may become relevant during a port day.

For guests sailing with Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International, Disney Cruise Line, and other operators, this is not an instruction to cancel. It is a reminder that a carefully managed ship excursion and an independent afternoon in Nassau do not necessarily carry the same safeguards.

The Bahamas Did Not Receive a Higher Warning Level

The most important distinction is also the easiest to lose in an alarming headline: the State Department did not raise The Bahamas above Level 2.

According to the department’s updated Bahamas Travel Advisory, there were “no changes to the advisory level or risk indicators.” The advisory summary itself was updated.

Level 2 means travelers should exercise increased caution. It is not the same as Level 3, which advises Americans to reconsider travel, or Level 4, which says not to travel.

That distinction matters for cruise passengers. A government advisory does not automatically mean a cruise line will remove Nassau from an itinerary. Ports can disappear for unrelated operational reasons, however, as guests recently saw when a Disney Wish sailing dropped its planned Nassau visit.

No itinerary change tied to the July 28 advisory has been confirmed.

Nassau Receives Particular Attention

The State Department says violent crime—including armed robberies, burglaries, and sexual assaults—can occur anywhere in The Bahamas. It identifies Nassau and Freeport, located on New Providence and Grand Bahama, respectively, as the places where most crime occurs.

Travelers are specifically told to remain alert in Nassau’s “Over the Hill” area south of Shirley Street, where the department says gangs have killed residents. Vacation-rental guests are also urged to use caution, especially at properties without private security.

These warnings carry different practical weight depending on the vacation. Passengers remaining aboard their ship or inside a controlled port destination may encounter a more structured environment. Those booking private transportation, visiting public beaches, staying before or after a cruise, or exploring independently have more decisions to make.

Nassau is deeply connected to Disney’s maritime business. It is a frequent port of call, and Disney Cruise Line’s ships are registered in The Bahamas. That relationship does not exempt passengers from Bahamian law or the realities described in the federal guidance.

Jet Skis and Independent Operators Draw a Strong Warning

One of the advisory’s most consequential sections concerns jet skis and personal watercraft.

The State Department says boating is not well regulated and that injuries and deaths have occurred. It also cites reports of sexual assaults by jet-ski operators. Because of the identified safety risks, U.S. government employees are not permitted to rent or use jet skis or personal watercraft from independent operators on New Providence or Paradise Island.

The restriction applies to government employees, not every American traveler. Still, it is a meaningful warning for cruise passengers considering a spontaneous rental after leaving the port.

The department says some operators may be uninsured or unlicensed, watercraft may be unsafe, and operators sometimes disregard weather forecasts. Travelers planning private charters should verify licensing and review information from the Bahamas Port Department.

Beachgoers are advised never to swim alone, to watch for watercraft operating close to shore, and to remain alert in public restrooms. The advisory also says sexual assaults have occurred on and near downtown Nassau beaches.

One Forgotten Item Could Become a Legal Crisis

The updated summary includes another warning that has little to do with street crime: firearms and ammunition are illegal in The Bahamas.

That includes small quantities accidentally left inside luggage or carry-on bags. The State Department says Bahamian authorities strictly enforce the law and have detained Americans for several days or longer, including when prohibited items were discovered as travelers attempted to leave.

Cruise passengers should inspect bags previously used for hunting, shooting ranges, or firearm storage before leaving home. “I forgot it was there” does not prevent arrest under local law.

The same principle applies when local rules temporarily affect cruise destinations. Bahamian law previously produced a one-day alcohol restriction affecting private-island visits, demonstrating how quickly laws on land can diverge from expectations formed aboard a ship.

What Cruise Guests Should Do Before Nassau

The State Department recommends enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, securing hotel and balcony doors, avoiding physical resistance during a robbery, reviewing its international travel checklist, and purchasing insurance that addresses medical care, evacuation, and cancellation.

Travel advisories covering cruise destinations are not unusual. The Bahamas was already included in previous State Department guidance affecting Disney-linked locations, while a more recent Mexico advisory carried different regional restrictions and risk categories.

For now, Nassau remains available—not forbidden. The practical change is what informed passengers should consider before walking away from the gangway: who arranged the excursion, where it goes, whether the operator is licensed, and what may still be hiding in their luggage.
