Pirates of the Caribbean Problems Fuel Debate Over Disney’s Next Major Attraction Update
Magic Kingdom is full of attractions that have stood the test of time, but even Disney’s most beloved rides aren’t immune to unexpected problems or major change.
That became clear this week when Pirates of the Caribbean spent much of the day out of service, leaving many guests scrambling to adjust their plans. On its own, a temporary closure isn’t unusual. Attractions go down from time to time, and Disney’s maintenance teams work quickly to get them running again.
But the timing couldn’t have been more interesting.
As rumors continue building around a possible year-long refurbishment for Space Mountain beginning in 2027, some fans are beginning to wonder which classic attraction could eventually be next in line for a significant investment.
Pirates Had an Unusual Day
Pirates of the Caribbean didn’t get off to the smooth start guests expected.
The attraction remained closed when Magic Kingdom opened and didn’t welcome riders until early afternoon. After finally reopening, it briefly went down again before resuming normal operation later in the day.
Anyone hoping to experience the ride first thing in the morning likely had to rethink their touring strategy. Others spent hours refreshing the My Disney Experience app, hoping to catch the attraction once it came back online.
Fortunately, everything points to this being a temporary operational issue rather than anything more serious.
Still, extended downtime on one of Magic Kingdom’s signature attractions always gets attention.
Space Mountain Could Soon Become the Bigger Story
While Pirates eventually reopened, another Disney favorite continues making headlines for a completely different reason.
Rumors suggest Disney could announce a major Space Mountain refurbishment after this year’s D23 Expo, potentially closing the coaster sometime in early 2027. If that happens, reports indicate the attraction could remain closed for more than a year while Disney modernizes major portions of the experience.
It’s important to remember that Disney has not confirmed any of those reports.
For now, Space Mountain continues operating normally, and guests can still enjoy the attraction as usual.
Even so, many fans believe Tomorrowland’s iconic coaster is overdue for a substantial update.
Disney Has Been Refreshing Its Classics
A lengthy Space Mountain closure wouldn’t be happening in a vacuum.
Over the past several years, Disney has shown a willingness to spend significant time updating attractions that have entertained generations of guests.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad recently completed its own extensive refurbishment, while Carousel of Progress remains closed for major improvements. Frontierland is also undergoing one of the largest transformations in Magic Kingdom history.
That pattern has led many Disney fans to believe more classic attractions will eventually receive similar attention.
Could Pirates Eventually Be Included?
There is nothing to suggest Pirates of the Caribbean is preparing for a major refurbishment.
Disney has announced no plans, filed no public timeline, and given guests no indication that the attraction is headed for a lengthy closure.
Even so, Pirates isn’t a young attraction anymore.
The ride has operated for more than five decades and has already received several updates over the years. Disney has refreshed individual scenes, replaced effects, and made story adjustments while largely preserving the attraction guests know and love.
If Disney eventually decides to perform a more comprehensive modernization, it would likely focus on reliability and maintenance while keeping the overall experience recognizable.
For now, though, Pirates simply experienced an unfortunate day.
As Space Mountain rumors continue to dominate conversation, the downtime served as a reminder that Magic Kingdom’s oldest attractions will eventually require continued investment if Disney wants them entertaining guests for another fifty years.
