After 33 Years, Silver Dollar City Announces the End of an Era in Branson, Missouri
One of Silver Dollar City’s most iconic attractions is spending its final months in the spotlight. Theme park guests who have ridden Thunderation for over three decades are now counting down to its last run.
The Last Chance to Ride
Silver Dollar City first broke the news in February that Thunderation, the steel mine train roller coaster that has been a cornerstone of the Branson, Missouri, theme park since April 1993, would not survive into 2027. The attraction will take its final riders on January 2, 2027, before the park closes out its 2026 season on January 3. Thirty-three years of operation will end there.
A special dedication ceremony opened Silver Dollar City’s 2026 season in March, and the coaster has been dressed in banners and celebratory regalia throughout its farewell year. Commemorative merchandise marking the 33-year run has been released for guests looking to bring a piece of the attraction home — a fitting send-off for a ride that has defined the park’s identity for more than three decades.

Silver Dollar City has leaned into its signature storytelling to explain the closure, announcing that the fictional Marvel Cave Mining Company has ordered the land reclaimed for new underground developments. What those developments will actually look like in real life hasn’t been revealed.
The Bigger Picture
The closure of Thunderation is just one move in one of Silver Dollar City’s most ambitious expansion plans in history. In October 2024, the park’s parent company announced a $500 million investment to be deployed over the next ten years — and the first tangible result is already taking shape. Silver Dollar City Resort, an onsite hotel featuring more than 250 guest rooms, pools, meeting space, a restaurant, and transportation directly to the theme park, is set to open in late 2026.
The park plans to reopen for its 2027 season sometime in March — the first season in 33 years that won’t include the familiar rumble of Thunderation rolling through the Ozarks. An exact reopening date hasn’t been announced.
