The transformation of Frontierland at Magic Kingdom Park is touching every corner of the land. The latest update reveals that even the maintenance barn attached to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has gotten a fresh coat of worn Western character.
The Barn Gets an Aged Look
WDWNT reported on July 13 that Walt Disney World Resort had applied new theming to the vehicle storage and maintenance barn attached to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. The building has been repainted in an aged brown color designed to match the worn, weathered Western aesthetic that defines the rest of Frontierland. The garage doors have received the same treatment — redone to look suitably battered and time-worn without actually being replaced. The siding and door structures themselves are the same as before; it’s a paint job, not a rebuild.
The barn was originally installed as part of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad’s year-long refurbishment, which ran from January 2025 through May 2026. That project was one of the most comprehensive overhauls the coaster had seen in decades — crews replaced the entire steel track, updated the ride vehicles, refreshed existing theming throughout, and added a brand-new Rainbow Caverns scene complete with glimmering stalagmites, glistening ponds, and audio-animatronic bats.
Everything Changing Around It
The barn update is a small detail within a much larger story unfolding across Frontierland. Last year, the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat closed permanently to make room for Piston Peak National Park — the Cars (2006)-inspired addition to Frontierland that will feature a family-friendly attraction and a rally race thrill ride, both designed to feel distinct from the Cars Land experiences at Disney California Adventure Park.
Walt Disney Imagineers are incorporating the natural landscapes of America’s national parks into the area’s design, weaving in elements of the surrounding Frontierland aesthetic and the former Rivers of America waterway.
The Haunted Mansion is also undergoing an exterior refurbishment as part of the broader Frontierland evolution. Once backstage portions of the attraction are expected to become visible to guests when Piston Peak National Park eventually opens.
And beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, the long-awaited Disney Villains land is in active development. Thousands of trees in the area have been cleared, and a temporary staging area has been established as Imagineers begin building out the expansion.
Walt Disney World Resort has not shared opening dates for either Piston Peak National Park or the Disney Villains land.
