Major Disney World Competitor Announces Closure in August 2026
One of Central Florida‘s most iconic roller coasters is heading into retirement, and the theme park that built it around a world record is already planning its replacement.
Kumba’s Final Day Is Set

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay announced on July 14 that Kumba, the steel coaster that has been roaring through the park since 1993, will permanently close on August 2, 2026. The announcement came via the park’s official Instagram page, where Busch Gardens paid tribute to the ride’s record-setting legacy while breaking the news to its fans:
“After 33 years, it’s time for Kumba to take its final roar on August 2nd… Debuting in 1993, Kumba set a new standard for thrill rides! It was Florida’s tallest, fastest, and longest roller coaster when it opened, and it featured the world’s tallest vertical loop. From its 7 exhilarating inversions to its iconic roar sound, Kumba has left its mark on Busch Gardens and will be remembered as an icon of the park.”

Guests who want to ride Kumba one last time have until August 2 to make the trip to the United Parks & Resorts-owned destination in Tampa Bay.
The $100 Million Plan That Follows

Busch Gardens isn’t closing Kumba without a plan for what fills the void. Alongside the closure announcement, the park revealed Kumba’s Revenge — a new roller coaster designed to carry the spirit of the original into a new era of thrills. The announcement framed the replacement as part of a broader $100 million investment aimed squarely at establishing Busch Gardens Tampa Bay as Florida’s dominant thrill destination:
“While Kumba may be retiring this summer, Busch Gardens is dedicated to thrilling the next generation of coaster enthusiasts by continuing the Kumba story. As part of our evolution and commitment to delivering innovative attractions, we are happy to announce Kumba’s Revenge! This new attraction is a part of our $100 million investment that will elevate Busch Gardens as Florida’s thrill leader and enhance our guest experience. Kumba’s Revenge is an extension of an already legendary coaster, and it will allow its spirit to live on as we enter a new era of thrills. The legend of Kumba will continue…Stay tuned for this brand-new adventure! 🎢”

No opening date for Kumba’s Revenge has been announced, and Busch Gardens has yet to share any specifics about what the new ride will deliver beyond the promise of a new era of thrills.
