Disney Guests Hit With New ‘Star Wars’ Queue Rules Effective Now

Disney’s approach to guest queues is changing once again.

For years, Disney has experimented with different ways to manage crowds as demand for its most popular attractions and experiences has grown. Traditional standby lines, paid Lightning Lane access, and virtual queues have all played a role across its global resorts.

The strategy has been especially noticeable with Star Wars. Since Star Tours debuted at Disneyland in 1987, the franchise has expanded into one of Disney’s biggest theme park brands, culminating in the arrival of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland Resort and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Those lands transformed Disney’s relationship with the franchise. Attractions like Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance were joined by lightsaber-building, droid workshops, themed dining, and interactive storytelling designed to immerse guests in the planet Batuu.

Disney has continued refining the experience. Earlier this year, Disneyland updated Galaxy’s Edge’s timeline to allow appearances from original trilogy characters, including Darth Vader, Leia Organa, and Han Solo, broadening the land’s appeal beyond the sequel-era setting.

Queue systems have evolved just as dramatically. When Rise of the Resistance first opened, guests were required to secure coveted boarding groups through a virtual queue, with places disappearing almost instantly on many mornings.

That system has since disappeared from Disney’s Star Wars attractions. Guests now typically choose between a conventional standby line or purchasing Lightning Lane access, restoring a more familiar way of experiencing the rides.

Another Virtual Queue Disappears at Disney

Disney has made another adjustment to its Star Wars operations.

Effective this week, guests no longer need to join a virtual queue to meet Darth Vader at Starport.

Located in Discoveryland, Starport offers “an out-of-this-world Character Encounter with a famous face from across the galaxy.” While Disney doesn’t guarantee a specific character, Darth Vader is typically the featured encounter.

The change means visitors can once again simply join a physical standby queue rather than reserving a place through the official app.

The move marks another reversal for the attraction.

Disney has repeatedly switched Starport between standby and virtual access over the past two years. The virtual queue returned in January after previously being removed in November. Before that, Disney had introduced the system for Starport in June 2025.

The latest adjustment leaves Starport operating differently from several other popular character experiences at the resort.

Woody from Toy Story, Meet Mickey Mouse, Princess Pavilion, Hero Training Center, and Rencontre Royale with Anna & Elsa all continue using virtual queues through the Disneyland Paris app.

Why Virtual Queues Continue To Divide Disney Fans

While it is now used infrequently, Disney’s virtual queue system has long been one of the most debated operational changes across its parks.

Supporters argue that it reduces the need to physically wait in line for hours, allowing guests to enjoy other attractions while they wait for their return time.

Critics, however, say the system replaces spontaneity with stress.

Many Walt Disney World visitors remember scrambling to secure boarding groups for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, TRON Lightcycle / Run, and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind. On busy days, reservations could disappear within seconds, leaving many guests unable to experience the attractions.

The process also required careful planning around fixed release times.

In the past, guests frequently set alarms before 7 a.m. to secure virtual queue access for attractions, including Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, then monitored the My Disney Experience app throughout the day while waiting for their boarding group to be called.

Missing a release window often meant changing an entire day’s itinerary or purchasing Lightning Lane access if it was available.

By returning Starport to a traditional standby line, Disney is eliminating one more virtual queue from its Star Wars offerings, even as the system remains in place for several character meet-and-greets elsewhere in the resort.

Whether more experiences will follow remains to be seen, but for now, Star Wars fans visiting Disneyland Paris can once again meet Darth Vader the old-fashioned way.

What do you think of Disney’s decision to axe the virtual queue to meet Darth Vader?
