NEWS: Confirmed Permit Points to Possible Magic Kingdom Closure

Permit season never really ends at Walt Disney World, and this week gave us two filings worth talking about. One is small and specific and involves a Magic Kingdom restaurant that has been feeding families since the park opened. The other is large and complicated and involves one of the most anticipated new lands in Animal Kingdom’s history.

We are going to cover both, and we are going to be honest about what they mean and what they do not.

The Liberty Tree Tavern News First, Because It Is Delightful

If you have eaten at Liberty Tree Tavern, you know the deal. Colonial American theming, family-style plates of roasted meats and sides, a warm room that feels like a genuine escape from the park crowds outside. It is one of those Magic Kingdom restaurants that has quietly maintained a loyal following for decades without needing to reinvent itself or compete for the loudest spotlight.

Well, something is coming.

Walt Disney Imagineering filed a Notice of Commencement for Liberty Tree Tavern this week. The permit calls for “general construction” and assigns the work to Aim Strategic Group, LLC, described as “a commercial construction company that focuses on small-scale jobs with corporations and construction managers who want to empower women in the industry.” They are also a member of the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions, so they know the Disney world well.

What does “general construction” mean in practice? Honestly, we do not know yet. Disney has not announced a refurbishment, has not said what is changing, and has not given any indication of scope. Liberty Tree Tavern is not the kind of restaurant that typically undergoes dramatic reinvention, so the smart assumption is that whatever is happening is relatively contained. A kitchen update, some interior work, mechanical or HVAC improvements. Something in that range.

But we will be watching, because this restaurant deserves attention and its loyal guests deserve to know what is coming.

It is also worth noting that Liberty Tree Tavern is doing this while Magic Kingdom is in the middle of an unusually active stretch. Cool Kids Summer programming has been running all season. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin both reopened. Jessie’s Roundup: A Rip-Roarin’ Revue debuted. The Tomorrowland refurbishment is ongoing and the Carousel of Progress got its own recent update. The park is moving and Liberty Tree Tavern is now officially part of that motion.

Now the Animal Kingdom Situation, Which Is More Complicated

Pueblo Esperanza is one of the most exciting things happening anywhere at Walt Disney World right now, and also one of the most closely watched. It is the new Tropical Americas-inspired land replacing the former DinoLand U.S.A., and the attractions Disney has planned for it are genuinely exciting.

There is a family-friendly carousel with animals from Disney stories. There is an all-new Encanto attraction built specifically for Animal Kingdom, one that will take guests into the Madrigal family’s casita through an experience created exclusively for this park. And there is a brand-new Indiana Jones adventure that Imagineering has confirmed will feature an original story made just for Walt Disney World, not a copy of the Disneyland version.

That last one is the one that has the Disney parks community particularly excited. An original Indiana Jones ride with its own story, built in a completely new thematic context, is the kind of thing that justifies waiting for.

The question is how long the wait actually is.

The Permit Extension Everyone Is Talking About

Here is the part that raised eyebrows this week. Walt Disney Imagineering filed an extension for a major installation permit connected to the Indiana Jones attraction at Pueblo Esperanza. Specifically, a set installation permit tied to the project has been renewed, giving the construction team more time to complete that phase.

We want to be careful here because permit extensions are genuinely common on projects of this size and complexity. A new Indiana Jones ride with its own ride system, original story, detailed show scenes, and extensive theming is exactly the kind of build where construction phases require flexibility. An extension does not confirm a delay. Disney has not announced that anything has slipped.

But it does raise a question. Extending a major installation permit by another year on a project that Disney has already said would open sometime in 2027 naturally makes people wonder whether that 2027 window is looking comfortable or tight. And right now, based on what the filings are showing, it is starting to look more like a late 2027 situation than an early one.

To be fair to Imagineering, they are managing an enormous amount simultaneously. Piston Peak National Park at Magic Kingdom, a massive Cars-inspired expansion that replaces the Rivers of America area. Villains Land, also at Magic Kingdom. Monstropolis at Hollywood Studios bringing new Monsters, Inc. experiences to that park. Running all of these in parallel while also building Pueblo Esperanza is a significant operational challenge, and occasional schedule adjustments are genuinely understandable in that context.

Disney has not confirmed a delay. We are not saying one has happened. What we are saying is that if you are booking a 2027 Animal Kingdom trip specifically to catch the Indiana Jones ride or the Encanto attraction at opening, giving yourself some flexibility in the back half of the year is the smarter move than locking into something in January.

What to Do With All of This Before Your Next Trip

If Liberty Tree Tavern is a regular stop on your Magic Kingdom itinerary, it is worth keeping an eye on any announcements about temporary closures or dining changes as the construction work gets underway. The restaurant is currently open and operating normally, and nothing in the permit filing suggests an imminent closure. But “general construction” is vague enough that it is worth monitoring.

If Pueblo Esperanza is the reason you are considering a 2027 Animal Kingdom trip, keep the timeline flexible. Second half of 2027 is the working assumption for anyone doing serious trip planning right now. If Disney announces an opening date that is earlier, great. If it comes in later than expected, you will be glad you did not lock in non-refundable travel around a specific window.

For guests visiting Animal Kingdom right now, DinoLand is completely gone and the construction walls are up across that entire section of the park. Factor that into your expectations if you have not been since the transition began.

Have you eaten at Liberty Tree Tavern recently and want to share what a meal there is like right now? Drop it in the comments, because that kind of firsthand dining intel is genuinely useful for guests trying to decide whether to book a table. And if Pueblo Esperanza is on your radar for a future trip, tell us which of those three attractions you are most excited about. We have strong opinions and we suspect you do too.
