Universal Epic Universe Sends Disney World Running for the Hills With Latest Announcement
Hurry, This Will Only Last for a Couple of Days
For years, nighttime has belonged to Disney. Families linger beneath glowing castle projections, guests rush for one last attraction before park close, and special after-hours events have become some of the most sought-after experiences at Walt Disney World. Staying late has evolved into more than extra ride time—it’s become part of the vacation itself.
But just across Orlando, something different has been quietly taking shape.
Since Epic Universe opened its gates, fans have repeatedly pointed to one detail that separates it from nearly every other major theme park in Central Florida: it seems built to come alive after sunset. As daylight fades, the park transforms into an entirely different experience, with dramatic lighting, illuminated attractions, glowing pathways, and cinematic landscapes that feel almost designed for the evening hours. Guests have spent months wondering whether Universal Orlando Resort would fully embrace that identity.
Now, it finally has.

Universal Is Turning Epic Universe Into an After-Dark Destination
Universal Orlando Resort has officially announced Universal Nights, a brand-new, limited-capacity after-hours event coming to Epic Universe on Saturday, October 3, and Saturday, October 17.

Running from 9:00 p.m. until midnight, the separately ticketed experience will allow guests to explore Epic Universe long after most day visitors have left. Better yet, ticket holders can enter the park beginning at 7:00 p.m., giving them time to experience the breathtaking Universal Celestial Goodnight nighttime spectacular before the exclusive event officially begins.
The event also includes specialty snacks and beverages, exclusive entertainment, character encounters, and nighttime access to attractions throughout the park. Tickets go on sale August 13, starting at $179.99 plus tax, with Universal promising additional details in the weeks ahead.
While the announcement itself is exciting, many longtime theme park fans immediately noticed something even bigger.

Fans Are Already Seeing the Disney World Comparison
It’s difficult to ignore the similarities.
Disney has spent years refining its popular After Hours events across Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Limited attendance, shorter waits, complimentary snacks, and the promise of experiencing beloved attractions in a calmer atmosphere have become major selling points for guests willing to pay a premium.
Universal’s newest announcement feels like a direct answer.
What makes this particularly fascinating isn’t simply that Universal is introducing another after-hours event. It’s choosing to launch it at the one park that may benefit from nighttime operations more than any destination in its portfolio.
Fans have repeatedly described Epic Universe as breathtaking after dark, with entire lands taking on completely different personalities once the lights come on. Celestial Park’s glowing architecture, atmospheric lighting, and carefully designed sightlines create an environment that many visitors believe reaches its full potential only after sunset.
For guests who have already visited during the day, Universal Nights offers something that feels less like a repeat visit and more like discovering the park all over again.

Epic Universe May Have Been Built for Moments Like This
What started as admiration for Epic Universe’s nighttime atmosphere has steadily grown into something bigger.
Unlike many traditional theme parks that simply illuminate existing pathways and attractions, Epic Universe was clearly designed with evening aesthetics in mind from the very beginning. Nearly every portal, attraction façade, water feature, and landscaped area incorporates lighting as part of the storytelling itself.
The result is a park that doesn’t merely stay open at night—it transforms.
That distinction matters.
Limited-capacity events allow guests to slow down, appreciate environmental details they may have rushed past earlier in the day, and experience attractions under dramatically different conditions. For photographers, dedicated fans, and first-time visitors alike, nighttime often delivers an entirely new perspective.
It’s the kind of immersive experience that increasingly resonates with modern theme park audiences, who are seeking more than just ride counts. They’re chasing atmosphere, memorable moments, and experiences worth sharing online.

This Could Mark the Beginning of a Much Bigger Competition
Universal has never hidden its ambition to compete directly with Disney, but Epic Universe represents something different.
Rather than simply adding another gate, Universal has created a destination capable of challenging Disney in areas where it has traditionally excelled—including premium guest experiences.
Universal Nights feels like another step in that strategy.
If the inaugural October events prove successful, it’s easy to imagine additional dates being added for future holiday seasons, special celebrations, or even year-round offerings. Limited-capacity experiences have become increasingly attractive for parks because they provide premium value while giving guests shorter waits and a more relaxed environment.
For Disney, that means another category where competition is intensifying.
For guests, however, increased competition could ultimately be good news. When both resorts continue investing in exclusive experiences, visitors benefit from more options, more innovation, and stronger reasons to keep returning.

The Battle for Orlando’s Nights May Just Be Beginning
Universal has only announced two dates so far, and many questions remain about exactly what entertainment, exclusive offerings, and character experiences guests can expect.
Even so, the announcement already feels significant.
For months, fans have argued that Epic Universe deserved an experience that truly showcased its remarkable nighttime design. Universal appears ready to test exactly how much demand exists—and early excitement suggests plenty of people have been waiting for this opportunity.
Whether Universal Nights becomes a seasonal tradition or grows into something even larger, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: the competition between Universal Orlando Resort and Walt Disney World is no longer focused solely on new attractions or bigger lands.
It’s expanding into who can create the most unforgettable experience after the sun goes down.
And if Epic Universe shines the way many fans believe it will, Disney may have a genuine new challenger for Orlando’s most magical nights.
