Disney World Files Major Permits Signaling Massive Overhaul at EPCOT’s Mexico Pavilion

Construction has become part of everyday life at Walt Disney World lately. Guests visiting the parks this summer are seeing major projects almost everywhere they turn. Magic Kingdom is preparing for huge expansion work, Disney’s Hollywood Studios keeps transforming, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom is rapidly changing as Tropical Americas rises in place of DinoLand U.S.A.

EPCOT may feel calmer than the other parks right now, but Disney is still not done making updates there, either.

Disney recently filed additional permits for the Mexico Pavilion, one of the busiest and most recognizable locations in World Showcase. While the permits do not point toward a major new ride announcement, they show Disney is continuing to invest in maintaining the pavilion for future guests.

Why Guests Love the Mexico Pavilion

Few spots inside EPCOT attract crowds as consistently as the Mexico Pavilion. The giant pyramid near the front of World Showcase immediately stands out, and many guests naturally make it one of their first stops around the lagoon.

Inside, the pavilion feels completely different from the Florida heat outside. Guests walk into a nighttime marketplace filled with lanterns, music, restaurants, shops, and the popular Gran Fiesta Tour Starring The Three Caballeros attraction.

The pavilion has become a favorite because it offers several experiences in one location. Guests can grab margaritas, enjoy table-service dining, browse merchandise, or relax indoors to escape the weather.

Gran Fiesta Tour continues to pull guests inside every day. The attraction remains one of EPCOT’s most charming rides, especially for longtime fans who appreciate the classic World Showcase atmosphere.

Because of that popularity, guests quickly noticed construction activity surrounding the pavilion earlier this year.

Construction Has Expanded Since February

Disney has actively worked on the Mexico Pavilion since February 2026. Over the last several months, guests have spotted scaffolding, themed scrims, and temporary walkway changes around portions of the exterior.

The refurbishment is still ongoing, and Disney recently filed another permit connected to the project. Two additional permits tied to elevator maintenance also appeared recently.

The filings suggest Disney continues focusing on infrastructure and long-term upkeep rather than quick cosmetic fixes.

Thankfully, the work has not caused major disruptions for guests visiting EPCOT. While some exterior areas continue changing, the pavilion itself has mostly operated as normal throughout construction.

That has made the project feel much smaller compared to what guests are currently seeing at the other parks.

A Major Overhaul

Whenever Disney files permits for the Mexico Pavilion, fans immediately begin speculating that Coco could replace Gran Fiesta Tour Starring The Three Caballeros.

Right now, though, nothing in the permit filings points toward that kind of transformation.

The permit language mainly references labor, construction materials, and electrical work tied to the ongoing refurbishment.

Even without a massive overhaul of the attractions, the project still matters for EPCOT. The Mexico Pavilion remains one of the park’s most visited areas, and maintaining the exterior and infrastructure helps preserve one of World Showcase’s signature locations.

Disney appears focused on keeping the pavilion looking polished while much larger construction projects dominate attention elsewhere across Walt Disney World.

EPCOT Feels Different From the Other Parks

Compared to the rest of Walt Disney World, EPCOT currently feels much less overwhelmed by construction.

Magic Kingdom continues preparing for Villains Land and the upcoming Piston Peak National Park expansion, which will replace Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island. Disney’s Hollywood Studios is still undergoing demolition in the former Muppets Courtyard area as Disney moves toward the future Monstropolis-themed land.

Meanwhile, Disney’s Animal Kingdom continues making major progress on Tropical Americas, including new Encanto and Indiana Jones experiences.

EPCOT is still changing, but they feel more manageable for guests right now.

The park is also continuing to roll out smaller updates across World Showcase and Future World. Refreshment Port near the Canada Pavilion remains temporarily closed, Frozen Ever After recently added new animatronics, and Soarin’ officially became Soarin’ Across America for America’s 250th anniversary celebration.

The Mexico Pavilion permits may not confirm the giant Coco announcement some fans hope for. Still, they do show Disney is continuing to invest in one of EPCOT’s most popular spaces.

What EPCOT update would you like to see happen next?
