Universal Studios Florida Shuts Down 25-Year-Old Attraction for Summer Refurbishment

Universal Orlando Resort may be in the middle of its Epic Universe era, but longtime fans know that some of the resort’s most beloved attractions are still found inside the older parks. One of those rides is Men in Black: Alien Attack, the interactive attraction that has entertained guests at Universal Studios Florida for more than two decades.

Now, however, the popular ride has temporarily gone dark.

According to a post shared by Inside Universal on X, Men in Black: Alien Attack is currently closed for refurbishment and is expected to reopen on June 17, 2026. The update quickly grabbed the attention of longtime Universal fans who immediately started speculating about what changes or improvements could be happening behind the scenes.

For many guests, the refurbishment actually comes at a pretty reasonable time.

Men in Black: Alien Attack first opened back in 2000, which means the attraction has now been operating for over 25 years. While the ride still pulls strong crowds daily, fans have occasionally pointed out issues with broken targets, weaker blasters, and effects that do not always work consistently.

That is part of the challenge with keeping an interactive attraction running smoothly for such a long time.

Unlike traditional dark rides where guests simply sit and watch scenes unfold, Men in Black relies heavily on gameplay elements. Guests compete against each other by shooting targets throughout the attraction while spinning through elaborate alien-filled scenes. Because the scoring system is such a major part of the ride experience, even minor technical issues can become noticeable quickly.

And despite its age, the attraction still has an incredibly loyal following.

Some Universal Orlando regulars ride Men in Black multiple times during every single visit. Others treat it almost like a competition, trying to beat high scores or earn the rare “galaxy defender” ranking. The ride’s replayability is a huge reason why it has survived while other attractions from that same era have disappeared.

That nostalgia factor matters more than ever right now.

Universal Orlando has changed dramatically over the last several years. Epic Universe opened in 2025 and brought massive new lands, attractions, and technology to the resort. Meanwhile, older attractions across Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure continue disappearing or changing.

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit closed permanently last year. The Lost Continent continues shrinking. Fast & Furious: Supercharged is also expected to eventually close.

Because of all those changes, fans tend to get nervous anytime an older attraction temporarily shuts down.

Fortunately, there is currently no indication that Men in Black: Alien Attack is leaving permanently. Everything points toward this simply being a scheduled refurbishment designed to improve and maintain the ride.

Still, fans are hopeful Universal may use this opportunity to make meaningful upgrades.

Some guests would love to see improved ride vehicles or updated blasters. Others want the attraction’s practical effects cleaned up and restored to their original quality. There are even fans hoping Universal adds enhanced lighting, better audio, or refreshed animatronics throughout the experience.

Whatever happens, the closure will definitely be noticeable during the busy summer season.

Men in Black serves as one of the park’s major indoor attractions, making it especially popular during Florida’s brutal afternoon heat and frequent rainstorms. With the ride temporarily unavailable, guests will likely shift toward other indoor rides like Revenge of the Mummy, Transformers: The Ride-3D, and E.T. Adventure.

That could create longer waits across Universal Studios Florida over the next couple of weeks.

At the same time, many fans are simply happy Universal continues investing in one of the park’s remaining classics. In a theme park era dominated by screens and giant intellectual properties, Men in Black still feels refreshingly old-school.

And honestly, that is exactly why so many people still love it.
