After 51 Years, Disney World Issues Sudden Closure Notice for Classic Tomorrowland Attraction
For years, Disney World fans have watched original attractions slowly disappear from the parks. Some rides received complete replacements, while others underwent major changes that permanently altered the experiences guests grew up with.
Now, Disney has confirmed that another iconic attraction is preparing for a dramatic transformation.
Carousel of Progress in Tomorrowland will officially close beginning July 6, 2026, as Disney launches a major reimagining of the historic attraction. Although the attraction will eventually reopen, the current version guests have known for generations is officially coming to an end.
That reality has many longtime Disney fans feeling conflicted.

Classic Disney Attractions Continue To Disappear
Disney’s parks have changed dramatically over the years, especially when it comes to original attractions.
Magic Kingdom transformed Splash Mountain into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, completely changing one of the park’s most recognizable rides. EPCOT also lost several classic attractions over time, including Maelstrom, which later became Frozen Ever After.
World of Motion eventually evolved into Test Track as Disney leaned further into modern technology and thrill attractions.
At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, The Great Movie Ride permanently closed and gave way to Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway.
Some guests welcomed those updates because they brought newer franchises into the parks. Others still miss the original concepts that helped make Disney World feel unique.
Now, Carousel of Progress is preparing to undergo its own major evolution.

Why Carousel of Progress Means So Much to Guests
Carousel of Progress has always stood apart from many other Disney attractions because it feels deeply connected to Walt Disney’s original vision.
Inside Tomorrowland, guests rotate through several decades alongside the same family as they watch technology and everyday life evolve around them. Each act focuses on different eras of innovation, showcasing changing appliances, entertainment systems, and visions of the future.
The attraction’s slower pace and nostalgic atmosphere have helped it remain popular for generations.
Many guests view Carousel of Progress as more than just a ride. It feels like a surviving piece of Disney history.
The attraction also carries enormous significance because Walt Disney conceived the concept for the 1964 New York World’s Fair, which later moved to Disneyland and eventually to Magic Kingdom.
That history gives the attraction emotional weight that many modern rides simply do not carry.

Disney Confirms Big Changes Are Coming
Disney has discussed refreshing Carousel of Progress for years, but the company has finally revealed what guests can expect moving forward.
Beginning July 6, 2026, the attraction will officially go dark as Disney begins its major overhaul.
One of the biggest additions involves a new Walt Disney animatronic appearing during the opening scene. Disney says the figure takes inspiration from the television special “Disneyland Goes to the World’s Fair,” where Walt Disney first introduced audiences to the Carousel of Progress concept.
Disney also confirmed the attraction’s timeline is shifting.
The updated show will move through these revised eras:
Act 1: The 1960s
Act 2: The 1980s
Act 3: The New Millennium
Act 4: The Possible Future
Alongside those changes, Disney plans to introduce updated effects, refreshed dialogue, and modernized technology throughout portions of the attraction.
Some fans are excited about the updates, especially after years of minimal changes. Others worry Disney may slowly strip away the nostalgic feeling that made the attraction special for decades.

The Attraction’s Most Famous Elements Will Remain
Despite the major overhaul, Disney says the attraction’s core identity will remain intact.
The rotating theater will stay, and guests will still follow the same family through multiple generations of progress and innovation.
Disney also confirmed that “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” will continue playing inside the attraction moving forward.
That news reassured many longtime fans who feared Disney might completely reinvent the attraction from top to bottom.
Instead, Disney appears focused on preserving the attraction’s spirit while modernizing portions of the experience for newer audiences.
Still, once July 6, 2026, arrives, the current version of Carousel of Progress officially becomes part of Disney history.
For many longtime fans, that alone makes this one of the most emotional Disney attraction updates in years.
