Disney Nears End of Cinderella Castle Overhaul, but One Major Element Is Still Missing

For the past few weeks, Walt Disney World fans have been watching Cinderella Castle closely, waiting for what many believed would be the final stage of its massive repainting project. The timing seemed perfect. Entertainment schedules had returned to normal, construction cranes were mostly gone from guest sightlines, and the castle itself appeared nearly complete from Main Street, U.S.A.

But despite all of those signs, the project is not fully finished just yet.

Guests visiting Magic Kingdom this week are discovering that while Cinderella Castle looks dramatically refreshed, Disney still has several noticeable details left to complete before the refurbishment officially wraps up.

From a distance, the castle honestly looks fantastic. The return of the classic gray-and-blue color palette has completely changed the atmosphere in the park’s central hub. Many longtime Disney fans have welcomed the move away from the rose-pink version that had remained in place for several years.

The repainting itself now appears mostly complete. Blue rooftops have been restored, gold accents are shining again, and the castle’s stonework finally resembles the more classic version guests remember from earlier Walt Disney World vacations.

Still, there are clear signs that Disney is not done working in the area.

The biggest giveaway is the moat, which remains fully drained. Construction equipment and scaffolding are still sitting around portions of the basin and surrounding rockwork. Certain walkways near the castle continue to feel slightly restricted as Disney crews finish cleanup and restoration work around the area.

For many fans, the empty moat has become the true sign that the project is still ongoing.

That’s especially important because many guests expected the work to conclude around May 10. While Disney never officially announced that exact finish date, fans connected the return of normal entertainment schedules to the assumption that construction would soon disappear entirely.

Instead, it now feels more like Disney simply reached a point where normal park operations could resume while final details continue behind the scenes.

The repainting project itself has been unfolding since January 2026. Early in the process, Disney adjusted stage shows and entertainment offerings around Cinderella Castle so cranes and work crews would not interfere with performances or guest photos. As the project moved forward, more sections of the original pink color disappeared until the castle slowly transformed back into its classic appearance.

By late April, most of the visible repainting had already been completed, leading many guests to believe the project was entering its final days.

And to be fair, it probably is.

The castle no longer feels like an active construction zone the way it did earlier this year. Photos from the front of the park look significantly cleaner, and guests can once again enjoy the iconic centerpiece without giant cranes towering overhead.

But Disney clearly still has some work remaining before the transformation is officially complete.

The moat needs to be refilled. Equipment still has to be removed. Rockwork restoration appears ongoing, and temporary lighting rigs recently added around the castle hub suggest there is still active work happening nearby.

Even with those unfinished elements, though, the overall response from guests has been overwhelmingly positive.

The return to the classic color scheme has become one of the most popular visual updates at Magic Kingdom in years. Many fans felt the older design better matched the timeless fantasy atmosphere Disney is known for, and now that the repainting is mostly visible, it is easy to understand why people are so excited about it.

At this point, the finish line is clearly close. Disney just is not fully there yet.
