Orlando Entertainment District Adds Tough New Rules After Hostile Teen Takeover

ICON Park Orlando is implementing a new chaperone policy for guests 17 and younger after more than 1,000 teenagers staged an organized teen takeover event at the International Drive entertainment district in late April, resulting in fights, multiple arrests, and two deputies being hospitalized. The incident was one of the most significant public safety events the entertainment district has experienced, and the policy change that followed is something every family planning a visit to ICON Park needs to understand before arriving.

What Happened

In late April, more than 1,000 teenagers descended on ICON Park as part of what was described as a teen takeover event. The sheer scale of the gathering created an environment that escalated quickly, with fights breaking out and law enforcement responding in force. Multiple arrests were made as individuals attempted to flee the scene. Two deputies sustained injuries during the response and were hospitalized before being released. Videos of the incident spread widely on social media and immediately sparked conversation about safety at the entertainment district. Authorities indicated awareness of potential future organized gatherings, which appears to have directly influenced the policy that followed.

The New Chaperone Policy

ICON Park has introduced a chaperone policy requiring guests 17 and younger to be accompanied by an adult 21 or older when the policy is in effect. One chaperone may supervise no more than six guests 17 and younger, and chaperones must remain with their group throughout the visit. Parents and guardians may be legally responsible for minors’ actions of minors on the property, and ICON Park makes clear that it does not assume responsibility for unattended minors.

The policy can be enforced at any time without advance notice, rather than following a fixed daily schedule. That flexibility is deliberate. ICON Park operates as an open-air entertainment district with multiple entry points rather than a single controlled gate, which makes enforcement more situational than in a traditional gated theme park. The any-time activation language gives security the ability to implement the chaperone requirement based on crowd conditions and security needs rather than a predictable window that could be worked around.

What Orlando Visitors Need to Know Before Going

For families planning visits to ICON Park, the practical reality of this policy is straightforward. If the chaperone policy is in effect when you arrive, any guest 17 or younger must be accompanied by an adult 21 or older. Under the policy, one adult may not supervise more than six minors. Checking ICON Park’s official website before visiting is the best way to stay informed about the current enforcement status, particularly for evening visits and high-traffic periods when the policy is most likely to be activated. Arriving with teenagers and being unprepared for the policy is an avoidable situation that a quick check before leaving home eliminates entirely.

ICON Park Is Still Adding New Orlando Experiences

The chaperone policy is arriving alongside continued investment in the entertainment district. A newly reimagined mini-golf experience has opened at the property—a new Build-A-Bear location described as the brand’s largest is coming to ICON Park. Blue Man Group is also set to debut a new show at the complex. Those additions reflect continued development of the guest experience at a property that is clearly responding to the April incident with operational changes while continuing to grow its entertainment offerings.
