Law Enforcement Rushes to Shades of Green, Emergency Reported at Disney World Military Hotel
On March 25, local authorities responded to reports of a fire at Shades of Green, a military-exclusive hotel at Walt Disney World Resort.
Shades of Green Resort at Walt Disney World

Shades of Green first opened as the Golf Resort, a Walt Disney World-owned hotel and country club, in 1973. Disney reimagined the property as The Disney Inn in 1986, retheming the hotel with amenities and decorations inspired by Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). However, even after a 150-room expansion, the Disney Resort hotel was much smaller than most lodging properties at Walt Disney World.
In the early 1990s, the Department of Defense (DoD) leased the property from Walt Disney World Resort and renamed it Shades of Green. The continental resort dedicated to serving military families was so popular that the DoD purchased it outright from Walt Disney World Resort in 1996, though Disney still owns the land on which it sits, not far from Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort.

These days, Shades of Green Resort has twice as many guest rooms, a conference center, and expanded amenities exclusively offered to military families. Visitors get many of the same theme park benefits as families staying at Disney Resort hotels (including Early Entry), and third-party bus transportation to Magic Kingdom Park, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park.
In addition to discounted Disney Park tickets for military families and veterans, guests staying at Shades of Green pay a sliding-scale room rate that increases with rank and pay tier.

Neither Shades of Green nor Walt Disney World Resort issued public statements about the fire. It’s unclear whether it had any impact on families staying at the DoD-owned hotel.
