Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover Shut Down at Disney World

A mechanical issue knocked the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover offline for hours on Monday, leaving a quiet queue where there’s usually a steady stream of Walt Disney World Resort guests winding through.

The Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover never made it to rope drop on March 16. When Magic Kingdom Park’s gates opened Monday morning, the 50-year-old attraction was already offline, with cast members positioned near the entrance and the queue sitting empty. WDWNT captured the scene and shared a photo on Facebook as the closure stretched through the morning and into the early afternoon.

Word from inside the park pointed to a possible problem with the ride’s central turntable — the continuously rotating boarding platform that keeps the attraction moving by allowing guests to step on and off without the vehicles ever fully stopping. Disney cast members on the ground were reportedly indicating that the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover might not reopen until “later in the day, if at all.”

Walt Disney World Resort did not issue a public statement about the unplanned closure.

Ride Running Again by Mid-Afternoon

The wait paid off for patient guests. While the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover remained down past 1:00 p.m., it had apparently returned to service shortly after 2:00 p.m. — the My Disney Experience app listed a five-minute wait. It initially spiked to 20 minutes as guests who had been holding out finally cycled through, though the number fell off quickly once the built-up demand cleared.

Whether the turntable was actually the source of the trouble or something else that forced the multi-hour shutdown hasn’t been confirmed. The Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover, which opened at Magic Kingdom Park in 1975, has no scheduled refurbishment on the books.
