Disney Park Closes Entire Land This Weekend After Losing DinoLand U.S.A. Three Weeks Ago

Disney’s Animal Kingdom is closing Rafiki’s Planet Watch on February 23, marking the second entire land closure in 2026 after DinoLand U.S.A. permanently closed on February 2. The closure eliminates the park’s only petting zoo and creates a significant gap in kid-friendly experiences until the area reopens in summer.

Starting February 23, three experiences close at Rafiki’s Planet Watch: the Affection Section petting zoo, the Wildlife Express Train, which provides the only transportation access to the area, and The Animation Experience at Conservation Station. The entire section becomes inaccessible to guests until reopening for Cool Kids’ Summer, which runs May 26 through September 8.

Why It’s Closing at Disney

All three closures are connected to a new Bluey experience coming to Animal Kingdom for Cool Kids’ Summer. This will be the first Bluey experience at Walt Disney World despite the Australian children’s show becoming enormously popular among young families. The show airs on Disney Channel and Disney Junior.

Disney hasn’t confirmed specific reopening dates or whether all three closed elements return when Rafiki’s Planet Watch reopens. The website language around The Animation Experience is particularly vague about whether that experience returns or if the Bluey experience permanently replaces it.

What’s Lost for Families

The Affection Section served as Disney World’s only petting zoo, allowing guests to interact with goats, sheep, and other domesticated animals. This hands-on experience appealed particularly to young children who may not have opportunities to interact with farm animals elsewhere.

The Wildlife Express Train closing means the entire Rafiki’s Planet Watch area becomes inaccessible since the train provides the only guest transportation from main park areas. The train itself appeals to young children who enjoy riding through backstage areas.

The Animation Experience at Conservation Station provided air-conditioned indoor activity where guests learned to draw Disney characters with guidance from Disney artists.

DinoLand U.S.A. Closed Three Weeks Ago

DinoLand U.S.A. permanently closed on February 2 to make way for Tropical Americas land featuring Encanto and Indiana Jones attractions scheduled for 2027. That closure already eliminated a kid-friendly land from Animal Kingdom.

Combined with Rafiki’s Planet Watch’s temporary closure, Animal Kingdom now has virtually no dedicated kid-friendly lands. Remaining child-appropriate experiences include Discovery Island Trails with Wilderness Explorers scavenger hunt, Festival of the Lion King at Africa, and Finding Nemo: The Big Blue and Beyond at Theater in the Wild.

That’s a limited selection for a Disney park that historically appealed to families with children of all ages rather than focusing primarily on thrill rides requiring height requirements.

Animal Kingdom Becomes Half-Day Disney Park

The compound effect of both closures leaves Animal Kingdom functioning primarily as an adult-focused park until summer at earliest. The park’s remaining attractions skew heavily toward experiences requiring height requirements or thematic content better suited to older children and adults.

Pandora features Avatar Flight of Passage with 44-inch height requirement. Expedition Everest has 44-inch height requirement. Kali River Rapids has 38-inch height requirement and gets guests soaking wet. Kilimanjaro Safaris works for all ages but functions as passive observation.

Festival of the Lion King and Finding Nemo provide age-appropriate entertainment, but they’re shows with fixed showtimes rather than continuous-access experiences that let kids engage at their own pace.

Disney Planning Considerations

For families visiting Animal Kingdom with young children between now and late May, the park offers significantly reduced kid-friendly experiences compared to Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, or Hollywood Studios. Magic Kingdom maintains numerous attractions without height requirements and interactive play areas.

Animal Kingdom has temporarily become more of a half-day park for families with toddlers and young elementary students rather than a full-day destination justifying the same ticket price as parks offering comprehensive experiences across all age groups.

The February 23 closure happens in just four days, marking the second time this year Animal Kingdom has lost an entire land. The closures cement the park’s shift toward adult-focused experiences until new lands open and Rafiki’s Planet Watch returns with the Bluey experience for Cool Kids’ Summer.
