Disney Breaks Its Own Rule, Shows Character Performer Out of Costume
A recent video from Walt Disney Imagineering breaks one of the company’s cardinal rules—showing a Disney character performer out of costume. In a rare behind-the-scenes video, Disney has shared footage of a performer rehearsing for his role as Peter Pan for a Disney Cruise Line stage show.

The footage was released as part of a YouTube video showcasing the Disney Cruise Line rehearsal studio in Toronto, Canada, where cast members are preparing for various onboard performances. The video begins with a look inside one of the 19 studios at the facility, featuring the entertainment cast rehearsing songs like “I’ve Got A Dream” from Tangled (2010) and “Prince Ali” from Aladdin (1992).
Next, the host takes viewers into a large studio where performers are rehearsing choreography with the advanced puppets planned for the “Disney Hercules” show on the Disney Destiny. This all-new entertainment offering will debut when the Disney Cruise Line vessel sets sail in November 2025.
But what stands out most is the footage showing a Peter Pan character performer rehearsing for his role on the ship.

“We’re going to head down to our Peter Pan stunt room, and we’re going to see Peter Pan fly,” the video host explains. “… We’re going to pop in and take a look at one of our performers who has learned the profile of flying on the Walt Disney Theater stage.”
The video cuts to Max, a Disney character performer, flying through the air while practicing his Peter Pan flight sequences. He sings “I Can Fly” while striking several iconic Peter Pan poses, offering a rare, out-of-costume look at one of the performers who bring this animated character to life.

Typically, Disney character performers are not supposed to reveal their identities, share backstage footage, or discuss the roles they play. To protect the magic for guests, they’re often instructed to say they’re “friends with” characters like Peter Pan or Cinderella. But this rare footage defies those usual rules and gives fans a unique behind-the-scenes look at the magic behind the Disney parks and Disney Cruise Line.
