Disney World Parks and Firearms: Orange County Sheriff Speaks Out

The cheerful hum of Walt Disney World—the laughter of children, the scent of churros, the iconic music drifting through the air—feels untouchable. Yet recent headlines about Florida’s “open carry” law have left some visitors questioning whether the parks are still safe. The good news? Disney’s strict rules and security systems mean guests can continue to enjoy the magic without worry.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier recently confirmed that open carry of firearms is legally permitted in certain circumstances, following a District Court of Appeals ruling that struck down prior restrictions. While the announcement made waves online, there’s an important clarification: this statewide change does not affect private property policies, including Walt Disney World.

This distinction matters. Disney has long enforced a zero-tolerance policy for firearms and weapons, and that remains unchanged. Millions of families visit each year knowing the parks are secure, and Disney’s security measures are designed to keep it that way while allowing everyone to enjoy their visit.

Disney’s Official Stance on Weapons

Walt Disney World confirmed in a statement to Florida Politics that no firearms, knives, ammunition, or weapons of any kind are allowed on property, including the theme parks, water parks, resorts, and Disney Springs. Violating this policy can result in being trespassed and removed from the property.

The First District Court of Appeal has ruled that Florida’s ban on Open Carry of firearms is not valid. Orange County Sheriff John Mina reinforced the point in a video message: private property owners, including Disney, have the legal right to prohibit firearms and enforce trespassing rules. This applies not just to theme parks, but hotels, shopping malls, and other businesses throughout the state.

Disney’s website outlines further details: all guests and their belongings may be subject to security screening. Any unattended or prohibited items are handled by security at Disney’s discretion to ensure a safe and worry-free experience for all visitors.

Tips for a Smooth Disney Visit

Planning ahead can make the security process stress-free. Arriving early helps guests navigate bag checks with minimal wait times. Ensuring bags comply with park rules and leaving prohibited items at home prevents delays. Using the My Disney Experience app is another smart way to check ride wait times, plan attractions, and stay informed about park updates.

Families should also reinforce the no-weapons rule with children and teens: Disney’s strict enforcement applies to everyone, and breaking the rule carries serious consequences. Scheduling breaks, dining, and attractions thoughtfully ensures guests spend less time waiting and more time enjoying the magic.

Since first stepping inside the Magic Kingdom at nine years old, I knew I was destined to be a theme Park enthusiast. Although I consider myself a theme Park junkie, I still have much to learn and discover about Disney. Universal Orlando Resort has my heart; being an Annual Passholder means visiting my favorite places on Earth when possible! When I’m not writing about Disney, Universal, or entertainment news, you’ll find me cruising on my motorcycle, hiking throughout my local metro parks, or spending quality time with my girlfriend, family, or friends.
