Six Flags Magic Mountain Shut Down Abruptly, No Longer Admitting Guests

On Monday, September 8, Six Flags Magic Mountain left many theme park guests feeling frustrated and confused when they arrived to find the gates locked and no staff present to admit them. Despite confirmation from the California park’s website and mobile app that the park would be open from 10:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., families were met with an empty parking lot and unstaffed ticket booths without prior notice about the unexpected closure.

The confusion started earlier in the week when the official website and app listed the park as open on Monday, September 8, even though Six Flags parks typically follow a weekend-only schedule after Labor Day. However, Six Flags Magic Mountain had recently updated its schedule to reflect that the park would start opening on Mondays beginning September 15, leaving many guests to assume that September 8 would follow the new hours.

Instead, those who showed up at Six Flags Magic Mountain were greeted with…nothing. Redditor u/Pippinitis was among the many guests who arrived to find a deserted park.

“The reinstatement of Mondays on the schedule was such a surprise, that even the SFMM staff didn’t know about it…,” the Six Flags guest wrote. “Nobody’s here except the cleaning guys power washing the place… a few people who drove a few hours to get here were particularly upset…”

The guest also shared a screenshot from the Six Flags app, showing that Magic Mountain was supposed to be open that day, but later, the app had been updated to indicate the closure.

Some Six Flags fans claimed that the park was never supposed to be open on Monday. However, the Redditor wasn’t the only one who saw the inaccurate Magic Mountain hours.

“It might say that now, but when I and the other confused visitors arrived, we compared our apps and it said the park was open at 10:30 am…,” the Redditor said.

“I have an old legacy membership, so I’m just out a little bit of gas money,” they added. “There were other folks who drove hours and took a day off work or pulled their kids out of school and they were visibly very upset. For those who had new MVP passes, I suggested they drive another hour to Knott’s since it’s open today. The ones who bought daily tickets online (for today!!!) pretty much got the shaft even if they could redeem them later.”

To date, Six Flags Magic Mountain has not released an official statement regarding the confusion or issues with its online schedules. Guests looking to enjoy the park’s major attractions, like Twisted Colossus, Apocalypse, and Tatsu, will have to wait until the park reopens on Friday, September 12. Six Flags Magic Mountain’s annual Halloween event, Fright Fest, will kick off on September 19.
